How to connect the motor?

Connecting the engine is the most important stage of work, if you cannot connect the engine from the washing machine correctly, then you will not be able to make a circular with your own hands. The whole difficulty is not even in the connection, but in achieving a stable adjustment of the motor speed, without this the circular will not work normally - the disc will tear the lumber.

The manufacturer installs a so-called tachometer or speed control sensor on the engine from the washing machine. But the problem is that the operation of this sensor is controlled by the electronic module of the washing machine, you cannot put such a module on the circular, so you have to think about the device that will control the engine speed. Moving parts

Having successfully connected the engine from an automatic washing machine with your own hands, and having checked how it picks up and decelerates, you can start making our circular. The diagram below shows a simplified drawing of a homemade circular saw made using a washing machine motor.

The diagram can be further simplified by being away from the bearing assembly. For household circulars, this is perfectly acceptable.

For now, we will only be interested in the moving elements of the circular, which will bear the main load, namely:

  • circular saw shaft;
  • washing machine motor shaft automatic machine;
  • drive belt;
  • washing machine motor pulley; automatic;
  • saw blade pulley.

The drive mechanism should work as follows. The motor from the washing machine drives a shaft with a small pulley pressed onto it. The small pulley is equipped with a drive belt, which transmits revolutions to a large pulley, which is put on a shaft, which drives a circular saw. It seems at first glance everything is simple, but when you make a circular, a lot of subtle difficulties emerge that have to be resolved.

  1. It is imperative to grind the small pulley with your own hands, making 3-4 transverse grooves on it, so that the belt clings to them and does not slip.
  2. The drive belt does not have to be taken from the washing machine, you can take a similar part from any other equipment, as long as the belt is strong and serrated.
  3. On a large pulley, you will have to weld a disc of a slightly larger diameter with your own hands on the edge, so that a kind of protrusion is formed that will prevent the drive belt from jumping off during operation. On a large pulley, it is not necessary to grind the serrations, the adhesion to the belt will be normal without it.
  4. The shaft on which the circular saw will be held, as well as the nut and washer, must be reliable so that, firstly, the circular saw does not deform at high speeds, and secondly, so that the circular saw does not jump out and cause harm to the person working with the circular ... It is better to take a finished shaft, washers and a nut from a standard factory circular.

The described mechanism is designed for a three-hundredth disc. There are many skeptics who say that the engine from the washing machine will not pull such a disc, and that it will stop at some point during operation, and the saw will get stuck in the board. Our specialists answer such skeptics as follows.

  • First, you need to be able to work with a circular saw and not push anything on a rotating saw.
  • Secondly, this circular will be purely household, it is designed for short-term work with a small amount of lumber. If you want to make a circular for a business, then purchase special components, such equipment is not made from improvised parts.
  • Thirdly, practice shows that quite a few craftsmen use such homemade equipment and are very satisfied. At least the reviews from them are mostly positive.

Bed and frame

Having assembled the parts for the moving parts of the circular, we just have to make a reliable frame and bed for our circular. In principle, for the bed of a household circular, you can take the most common improvised material, for example, a piece of thick flat slate. Cutting a rectangle out of it and cutting a hole for a circular saw costs nothing. But we are supporters of capital structures, therefore, we prefer to take a sheet of metal with a thickness of 3 mm for the circular frame, and a metal corner for the frame of 30 mm.

In the picture above, you can clearly see what elements the frame of a homemade circular consists of. In this case, it is also welded by hand, only not a static metal corner is used as supports, but special home-made racks. The stand is made of two metal pipes of different diameters, which are inserted into each other, so the circular bed can be adjusted in height.

Experts insist on a welded frame for the circular, since vibration is bad for static fastenings created with bolts. Although if you do not have welding, as a last resort, you can make a frame from the corners by fastening them together with bolts and nuts. It is also better to weld the bed to the frame.

Hello everyone, if you still have an engine from a washing machine - do not rush to throw it away, you can make wonderful machines out of it. This is a sharpener, a lathe, and much more. In this manual, we will analyze how to make on the basis of such an engine. With it, you can cut plywood, boards and much more, which greatly simplifies the life of the master.


As a power unit, the author used a 430-watt automatic machine from a washing machine. The selected motor produces as much as 15,000 rpm, at such speeds the saw has a monstrous performance, but this is unsafe and unnecessary, so in the future the author plans to reduce the speed by installing a resistor or something similar. The machine is assembled simply and quickly, the author's table was already ready, he used an old foot sewing machine. So, let's figure out in more detail how to assemble such a machine!

Materials and tools used

List of materials:
- the engine from the washing machine;
- metal table (from an old sewing machine);
- corners, channel bars, etc. (for the manufacture of a frame for the engine);

Circular machine manufacturing process:

Step one. Preparing the base
As a basis, the author used a metal table, which in ancient times was part of a foot sewing machine. You can assemble a similar table from scratch using a corner, pipes or something similar. We weld two corners or channels, to which we then screw the engine.








Step two. Installing the engine
To mount the engine, we take two channels or corners, we screw the motor to them. The author drilled holes in the mounting "ears" of the engine and screwed it with bolts and nuts. It is useful to use a grower here so that the engine does not spin from vibrations.
Well, then we fasten the engine to the table using bolts and nuts.









Step three. Switch
To use the machine conveniently and safely, we install a switch in a convenient place and it is advisable to use an automatic machine of a suitable rating. The machine will turn off the engine if it jams. The author screwed a piece of OSB to the table and fixed the switch on it.







Step three. Finishing
As an end, we screw protective plywood plates over the engine so that no shavings fall on it. We cut out the parts from plywood and fasten them with self-tapping screws. That's all, the machine is ready, let's start testing! During tests, it turned out that the revolutions are too high, from this the table drives around the garage. The power of such an engine turned out to be more than enough. In the future, the author plans to modernize the machine - to reduce the speed.

Design - main units, their purpose

A stationary circular saw with your own hands is created with advancement in several possible directions:

  • adapting existing hand tools using a motor and a circular saw for new possibilities;
  • improvement of industrial products to expand functionality;
  • assembly from individual parts, mainly manufactured in-house.

A stationary circular machine includes several main components: a table, a shaft, a motor and some others, the characteristics of which are not so important.

The table is used for fixing woodworking machinery. It can be assembled entirely from metal, which is preferable, especially for machines with a high power motor. Wood also makes good circular tables. But it must be borne in mind that the countertop should be covered with a sheet of metal, otherwise the wood will soon wear out. Tables must be very rigid and stable, capable of withstanding considerable workload. The surface is made perfectly flat; protection shields are required over the rotating parts.

For a homemade circular, an engine from a washing machine is well suited. Portable tools are less suitable: their collector motors are only designed for short-term operation. They have very high speed, low efficiency, they are afraid of clogging. You can use a three-phase electric motor, but if the farm does not have 380 V, you will need to purchase capacitors so that it works from 220 V.

The most critical unit is the shaft. Use ready-made, if available, or grind from round metal. The work on the lathe is performed in one setting, then, assembled with the working bodies, centering is checked. Even a minimal runout is unacceptable, otherwise it will become stronger in work, at which work is unacceptable. There are seats on the shaft: for a circular saw and for pulleys on the other side. You can also make grooves for planing knives.

Basic parameters - calculation of power, rpm, transmission

The characteristics of the saw blade, the engine and the maximum thickness of the lumber that can be cut are interrelated. On the purchased circular disc, the maximum speed for which it is designed is indicated. The number of revolutions transmitted by the motor to the shaft should be less. The motor power affects the maximum permissible diameter of the serrated saw. The diameter must be at least three times the thickness of the material, otherwise it will be difficult to cut. It is believed that for cutting materials with a thickness of 100 mm, a motor of at least 1 kW of power is needed.

The transmission is done only by V-belt - when foreign objects get under the saw, material is jammed, the belt slips on the pulleys. Injuries in such cases are practically excluded. It is important to choose the right gear ratio. We take into account two indicators: engine speed and the maximum allowable saw blade speed. We calculate the required diameters of the pulleys. A pulley with a large diameter is installed on the engine, and a pulley with a smaller diameter is installed on the circular shaft in order to increase the speed.

The revolutions of the shaft with a circular saw are as many times greater than the revolutions of the engine, the smaller the diameter of its pulley is from the diameter of the pulley on the engine.

Woodworking machine - capital product for the home

For work with wood in large volumes, it is better to have a machine that allows you to cut the material, plan, choose a quarter. A sufficiently powerful electric motor is required, a rigid table. We present a structure made of steel angle and sheet steel. It provides a cutting depth of 60 mm, it is possible to plan boards with a width of 200 mm. A three-phase motor 1.1 kW, 2700 rpm is used. Capacitors are required to connect to 220V.

The working table has dimensions of 700 × 300 mm. In the drawing we see that the height of the entire structure is 350 mm. The height is insufficient for comfortable work, the circular will have to be installed on an additional platform, it weighs only 35 kg. The length and width can be increased, the height can be increased up to 1200 mm. The rest of the dimensions are adjusted to fit them, but the design features remain unchanged.

First, we make the frame of the bed from steel corners of 25 × 25 mm. If we are not going to increase the height, we make another similar lower frame. For a frame with a higher height, first weld four legs from the same corners to the upper frame, and then we make them strapping at a height of 15–20 cm from the bottom. The lower frame has slots for the engine deck retaining bolts. Two studs are welded to the rear side of the platform, extending into the holes on the back of the lower frame. Tightening the studs, we tighten the belts, then we stop the platform by tightening the nuts on the studs that go into the grooves.

To adjust the height of the table in relation to the saw, we use a simple lifting mechanism. It consists of racks, in the upper part of which we cut grooves at an angle of 45 °. In total, you need eight racks - four on each side. We weld them to the frame with the grooves located in the mirror image. We attach the crossbars to the outer racks. Drill holes in the middle of each of them, weld nuts. The threaded shafts will move along them to regulate the lift.

At the end, they abut against the racks welded to the side bars assembled from corners of 75 × 50 mm. On the side, we weld the studs opposite the grooves for the adjusting mechanism. The table consists of two equal halves, is attached to the side bars with countersunk head bolts. The adjusting mechanism works like this:

  • release the nuts on the racks;
  • turn the screw that presses on the stop, raising or lowering the table;
  • tighten the stud nuts;
  • we carry out a similar adjustment for the second half of the working surface.

The design can be simplified by not installing an adjusting shaft. Raise and lower the table manually. If you assemble a table not from two halves, but solid, you only need four stands for the lifting mechanism.

Hand-held circular saw - converting to stationary

It is easy to make a stationary saw from a hand-held circular saw, expanding its capabilities. The first step is to need a table. Finnish plywood will serve as a convenient material, which, unlike ordinary plywood, is laminated - the workpieces slide well on the surface during processing. It is thick enough to withstand a lot of weight, moisture resistant, and easy to process. You can use ordinary 20 mm plywood, only it needs to be painted, and it is better to cover it with sheet steel or textolite.

You need to understand that the depth of cut will decrease by the thickness of the cover. A large diameter disc will be required so as not to reduce functionality compared to a portable tool. We make the dimensions of the tabletop sufficient so that the workpiece fits in width. It should be added that an electric plane and a jigsaw can be additionally strengthened on a wide table, which will make the machine universal.

Using the drawings and explanations, it is not difficult to make additional attachments for the circular saw that will expand its capabilities.

We mark a rectangle of the required size on a sheet of plywood, cut it out, process the edges. With the sole, we apply a hand circular to the surface and mark the attachment points with a pencil. We make a slot for a circular saw. You can slightly deepen the attachment point using a cutter, but not more than 10 mm, so as not to weaken the tabletop. This manufacturing method will allow you to bring the cutting depth closer to the circular saw specified in the passport.

We make a frame (drawers) from the boards, which we will install from below to strengthen the structure. We fasten four boards in a box, glue them to the tabletop, securing them with clamps. Screw the screws into the boards through the table. We countersink the holes for them from above so that the heads of the self-tapping screws are hidden. We attach the legs to the side bars of the stationary saw, preferably with bolts, washers and nuts. The table should be provided with additional rigidity, so we make spacers at the bottom of the legs.

We make a limiting bar equal to the length of the working surface. In it we drill two grooves perpendicular to the disk, in which the bar will move and be fixed at a certain distance from the saw blade. It remains to make changes to the control system: we fix the control button in the on state with electrical tape. We install an outlet connected to the network on the tsarga. In the break of the wire going to the saw, we mount the switch.

Some moments of the execution of self-made devices

No matter how well the circular is made, individual mistakes can lead to the fact that its performance will be limited. This applies, at first glance, seemingly trifles. Let's start with the bearings for the shaft. The usual installation is justified if the machine is used from time to time. For a homemade device with constant use, it is best to install self-aligning bearings. They consist of two rows of balls, adjustable by tightening the clamping nut. Install a cover to protect it from dust, swarf.

On the working surface, we apply a scale with a step of a centimeter. This will make woodwork much easier when determining the width of the cut. Many people neglect to install a protective shield over the disc, and in vain - treatment for chips in the eye or in more serious situations is more expensive.

When working with different materials, it is often necessary to adjust the speed of the circular saw. A homemade design, as a rule, does not have the ability to regulate the engine speed. There is only one way out - the use of pulleys of various diameters. They are installed on the motor shaft. If you undertake to order pulleys from a turner, immediately make a solid pulley with two or three different diameters.

Many people want to install a three-phase electric motor on the sawing machine without 380 V. You will need paper or oil-paper type capacitors designed for a minimum operating voltage of 600 V.

We calculate the capacitance of the capacitors based on the power of the electric motor: for 1 kW - 100 μF for the working capacitor Cf. We take the capacity of the starting Cn twice as much. The SB trigger is a button that automatically returns to its original position. The launch is simple: SQ turns on, SB is pressed for a couple of seconds. After starting, the button is released, as soon as the engine picks up speed, you can saw.

A circular saw is a specialized equipment that is used for sawing wood, laminate, some types of wall panels, sheet materials such as plywood, OSB, chipboard. When carrying out a number of construction and repair works and carpentry operations, the presence of a stationary sawing unit can significantly reduce the time required and improve the quality of the result. If it is not possible to purchase a factory-made model, then you can assemble a circular saw with your own hands. To make it yourself, you will need the most common locksmith tools and the skill of working with them. The more necessary materials and parts are available, the cheaper the project will cost.

Advice! To improve personal safety when operating a self-made mechanism, its rotating parts located under the table should be covered with covers. A protective cover must be installed over the disc during equipment downtime.

It is better to place the starting device in a visible place of the panel (made of dielectric material) so that access to it is free. It is also advisable to equip the machine emergency switch... At the same time, it is convenient when it is large.

Focusing on your own needs, you can improve the unit by making it with a jointer or plane. To do this, it is enough to fix a drum with knives on the existing shaft, and make a slot in the table for it of the appropriate size. This will expand the functionality of the created installation: to plan lumber on it, chamfer and select a quarter from wooden blanks.

If you plan to regularly perform carpentry operations on homemade equipment, then it is recommended to equip it coordinate table with multiple guides. They need to be fixed at different angles. To organize productive work, you should also provide for the ability to adjust the speed of the electric motor and quickly replace the discs if necessary.

Selection of materials and parts

When creating a homemade circular saw, it is necessary to maintain an optimal balance between its functionality, safety during operation and manufacturing costs. To achieve this, you must select materials and parts with the desired characteristics. To reduce costs, you need to start from old or unused equipment that is available.

Materials for making a bed with a table

For the manufacture of the bed (frame), you can use channel or metal corners(enough size from 25 × 25 mm to 50 × 50 mm). If these materials are not available, then the most economical option is to purchase them at the scrap metal collection point. The legs of the machine will be used for water supply or profile pipes made of metal.

Advice! The frame elements must be connected to each other using electric welding, because the bolted connections are unwound under the influence of vibrations.

When assembling the bed, it is also required to weld spacers in the corners to stiffen the structure. To make it easier to move the machine, you can equip it with sturdy wheels (with a metal rim) equipped with locks. It should be borne in mind that the more massive the unit being created, the more stable it must be in order to avoid injury.

Metal tube bed

The main requirements for a circular table are: resistance to mechanical stress (vibration, shock), the ability to withstand workpieces weighing more than 50 kg without deflection, and surface smoothness. These properties are characterized by sheets of the following materials:

  • become;
  • duralumin;
  • silumin;
  • textolite;
  • moisture resistant plywood;
  • organic glass.

If you use moisture resistant plywood, then it should be previously upholstered with zinc-coated tin. It is not recommended to use chipboard or OSB due to the instability of these sheet materials to vibration effects.

Important! The strength of the table is of great practical importance. If it cracks or skews due to deflection, the disc can jam. This can lead not only to damage to the workpiece, but also to injury.

To carry out various works (for example, unfolding logs onto boards), you need to equip the table side stop... It has the same function as a hand-held circular saw bar: it ensures that the lumber is cut evenly. At the same time, its use makes it possible to obtain blanks of different sizes.

Guide stop must be strictly parallel to the disc to avoid jamming of the latter. It can be made from a piece of wood or a metal corner. In the first case, only hardwood should be used. To be able to adjust the working gap, the stop must be removable. It can be fixed with clamps or in special grooves (bolts) made parallel to each other on the working surface of the table top.

Choice of engine and starting equipment

As a drive for the considered version of a homemade circular machine, it is easiest to use single phase electric motor... Its power needs to be selected taking into account the forthcoming load. Indirectly, you can navigate by the diameter of the disk to be installed:

  • if it is 350 mm, then for the normal operation of the unit, an electric motor with a power of 1000 W is needed;
  • for a disc with a diameter of 170 mm, a 500 W motor is sufficient.

In the latter case, it is possible to make a drive mechanism from a motor from a washing machine. It is able to work for a long time at an average load level. For discs with a diameter of 350 mm, an electric motor from an industrial ventilation unit is suitable. It should be fixed firmly to ensure proper engagement of the belt drive. For this reason, it will not be possible to reduce the vibration level by installing the motor on the shock absorbers: it will constantly fluctuate.

Can also equip homemade equipment three-phase electric motor(380 V) of suitable power. To start it from a 220 V network, it will be necessary to additionally install a working (phase-shifting) and starting capacitors in the electrical circuit. It should also be borne in mind that the engine power in this case will be less than the nominal value indicated on its nameplate or in the passport.

The starting equipment should be selected based on the motor power, on which the maximum current in the circuit will depend. A good option is to use the start button in conjunction with thermal protection - this will protect the electric motor from burning out the windings if the current rises when the disk is jammed. It is better to install the protection in a separate electrical panel attached to the side panel of the machine from the convenient side.

All connections must be well insulated so that the wires are not shorted to the frame of a homemade circular electric saw. The on and off buttons should be pressed without any effort. Due to the frequent storage of equipment outdoors, the electrical part is necessary well protect from getting wet... The simplest thing is to cover the unit with oilcloth or a similar waterproof material.

Gear, shaft and disc

To transfer rotation from the electric motor to the disc, the best option is to use V-belt together with pulleys from the car engine. Gears are not recommended for safety reasons. This is due to the fact that if the disc is jammed, the belt will simply slip, and the gear transmission, due to its rigidity, can cause failure of the entire drive unit.

Advice! If you use pulleys of different diameters, then it will be possible to change the speed of the disk and install various types of it on the machine. This is true in the absence of an electric motor speed regulator.

Shaft making it is better to entrust it to a specialist by ordering it from a professional turner. Moreover, when it is planned to make the circular electric saw more functional by equipping it, for example, with a plane. But the easiest option is to buy a finished factory-made part. A sample of it is shown in the photo below.

Disc for circular lathe it is easier to buy a ready-made one than to make it from a sheet of tool steel. The problem is balancing. Unbalance of the saw during the operation of the equipment leads to its rapid failure and reduces the level of safety of the working process. If you have a circular saw for wood, you can remove the saw blade from it.

It is necessary that the diameter of the disc corresponds to the corresponding parameter of the sawn timber: for example, for 100 mm of logs, you will need to use a saw with a size of about 350 mm. This is due to the fact that the disc should not protrude more than a third of its diameter above the working surface of the table.

Ignoring this requirement leads not only to a deterioration in the quality of sawing workpieces, but also increases the possibility of injury.

Algorithm for assembling a homemade circular saw

The assembly of the woodworking machine according to the above drawing is performed in the following sequence:

  • a rectangular frame is made from the corners;
  • four legs are welded to it at the corners of the desired height;
  • at a height of about 200 mm from their lower edge, a strapping is made from the corners;
  • a shaft is mounted on the upper frame;
  • the driven pulley is fixed on one side of it, and the disk on the other;
  • a table with a lifting mechanism is made and attached to the bed;
  • on the lower frame, a platform is made of corners or sheet metal for an electric motor;
  • the drive pulley is fixed on the motor shaft;
  • put the belt on the pulleys;
  • on the side panel of the unit, on and off buttons and an electrical panel are mounted;
  • using wires of a suitable cross-section, connect the elements of the electrical circuit of the equipment (engine, buttons, protection);
  • supply power to the machine from a stationary network.

The final step is checking the functionality of the assembled equipment... To begin with, you should make sure that all moving parts are free to rotate: for this, you just need to turn the drive pulley by hand. Then you can start the unit in test mode. If strong vibration is found, then it will be necessary to check the reliability of the bolted connections and fixing the disc.

You can make a circular saw with a table consisting of two halves or a solid one. In the latter case, you will need to cut a rectangular slot for the disc in it. Important! It is recommended to install a riving knife to prevent the saw from jamming due to the joining of fragments of the workpiece being cut. It should be positioned approximately 3 mm behind the disc.

To adjust the belt tension, the motor must be positioned so that it can be moved. The easiest way to achieve this is by creating slots that are larger than required for the motor mounting bolts. In this case, the expansion of the holes should be carried out in the direction of the belt tension.

If you completely follow the drawing, you will need to make a more complex belt tensioning mechanism. The process will be carried out by pulling the platform with an electric motor using pins and fixing it with locking bolts in the desired position (in the drawing, these structural elements are indicated by the number 10).

The entire structure and assembly process can be greatly simplified if you make circular from a circular saw... In this case, there is no need to install a number of parts (motor, disk, shaft, belt, starter). But the capabilities of the created model will be limited by the power of the tool used.
