Finding a ready-made chinchilla cage is extremely difficult. This acquisition will have too much impact on the family budget. Therefore, the ideal option is to make a cage with your own hands. And with the help of step-by-step instructions, the necessary product can be made without even having experience in carpentry work.

Requirements

It doesn't matter which cage option is chosen. In any case, she is obliged to meet all the requirements:

  • be dry;
  • comfortable;
  • not too cold;
  • with good lighting;
  • with ventilation.

It must be understood that the chinchilla is an incredibly mobile animal, therefore, it needs as much free space as possible. Therefore, you should start from the minimum cage size per pet:

  • length and width not less than 50 cm;
  • height - 75 cm.

However, loneliness is not for these rodents. This means that if there are more than one of them, the larger the house must be. And we must not forget about the play area. After all, movement for them is life, and it is extremely difficult to sit in one place. Otherwise, the animals can get sick.

If chinchillas begin to live in a private house, then you can build a real spacious aviary, where they will climb and climb with great pleasure. In another case, it is worth choosing a vertical structure with several floors in the form of shelves. In addition, it is great for small areas.

Views

There are many different types of products.

Showcase cage

Wood is taken as a basis, it is considered the cleanest environmentally friendly material, attractive in appearance, which is well suited for breeding chinchillas. However, there is one big drawback - rodents can easily gnaw through the cage. Therefore, it must be sheathed with a harder material. And this is an extra waste. And so that no sounds can be heard from the inside, the sides should be closed with glass by all means.

Homemade option

As a rule, this type of cage is in great demand, because you can use a wide variety of materials that are easy to find at home at any time, you don't even have to go shopping. For example, an old, useless wooden bedside table or wardrobe will do. Only the very minimum of additional materials is required:

  1. metal mesh or glass to close the free space;
  2. plywood for cladding.

One drawback - it takes time to manufacture, which is often not enough.

Metal cage

This construction, consisting of a ready-made house, is very affordable and convenient during transportation. You just need to disassemble it in parts and put it in your bag. Also, the cage can be easily cleaned and disinfected. However, there are several drawbacks here too - the sounds and noises coming from the cage, when the animals intensively run and climb stairs, are not suppressed by anything. Everything else can be easily corrected.

Tools and materials

To build a chinchilla cage at home, you should purchase the safest materials made only from natural wood: birch or pine. They are the ones that lend themselves well to processing, and they are not too expensive. For a strong frame, edged boards, bars or lining are suitable. Ordinary boards may be suitable for future shelves.

And in order to tighten all available holes, you will need a mesh of strong metal, but with small cells, no more than 3 cm, which should be placed on one side or on two opposite ones. This is necessary for good ventilation. At the same time, it can be made from ready-made sections, or it can be independently welded from wire, preferably from high-quality material. It is recommended to place the net above the bottom. This way you can easily reduce the amount of waste that falls on the floor. And do not forget to purchase a special anti-corrosion agent to extend the life of the cage.

But if there is no extra money, then you should pay attention to the old, already useless cabinet, whatnot or bedside table. In this case, it is enough just to drag all the existing doors with a regular mesh, and cut holes in the shelves for future ladders.

This design is very convenient to use, and you don't need to spend a lot of money. You can get by with minimal investment.

Of the tools you need only:

  1. hacksaw;
  2. hammer;
  3. scissors for metal;
  4. electric jigsaw;
  5. marker;
  6. drill and drills for wood;
  7. ruler.

Accessories are also needed:

  1. ready-made locks so that the doors can close well;
  2. hinges for doors;
  3. wheels for fastening.

Manufacturing

When there is nothing in the house that is suitable for alteration under a showcase, then the most budgetary option would be to make a shelter from chipboards. The main thing is not to forget to purchase the necessary tools, building materials and accessories.

For work you will need:

  1. chipboard plates as the main material;
  2. galvanized metal mesh with small cells;
  3. plexiglass for doors;
  4. wood slabs for shelves;
  5. adhesive tape for processing the edges of the cage, especially in the cut areas;
  6. tie screws and drills;
  7. nuts, screws, screws;
  8. fittings for glass doors;
  9. welding machine;
  10. Bulgarian;
  11. self-tapping screws.

Before you start designing, it is imperative to draw up a drawing that you can find ready-made or come up with something of your own. Then you should cut out all the necessary details. Moreover, this can be done both independently and by contacting the workshop. And only then start work. Do not forget to allocate free space for this.

During manufacturing, you should adhere to a certain scheme.

  • Prepare a drawing according to previously taken measurements. It is advisable to scrupulously double-check everything several times before starting to cut out any important detail.

  • From the bars, relying on the measurements indicated in the drawing, make a rectangular base, and then sheathe it with a sheet of strong plywood in one layer.

  • If the removable pallet will not be installed, then the base must be carefully treated with silicone sealant, which will help save the tree from the appearance of various odors, as well as the absorption of liquid.

  • Then you need to build up a frame of vertical bars, which should be fixed at the corners of the base using long nails or self-tapping screws.

  • For greater stability, it is worth making a pair of crossbars along the height of the walls. In the future, it will be possible to fix the necessary shelves on them.

  • The roof and walls should be tightened with a strong mesh using self-tapping screws with huge caps. And so that the animal cannot get hurt by biting sharp edges, install metal profiles.

  • To make it easy and simple to clean up in the cage in the future, it is advisable to make a couple of doors from different sides, as well as a removable cover. The frames are made of lining, and the door fasteners should be placed on metal hinges.

  • For future shelves, it is better to choose solid boards, on which you need to make small holes so that you can move freely along them, getting to any floor.

  • It is advisable to close the back wall, as well as one side of the cage, with one large sheet of plywood to protect it from drafts.

In this case, the entire structure should be raised slightly from the floor in order to protect thermophilic pets from frost. Strong legs or a special stand in the form of a curbstone will help here. Moreover, the resulting free space at the bottom of the cage can then be used: feed, sawdust and other accessories can be stored there.

Finally, it is recommended to treat the entire cage with a special impregnation. Outside, paint with varnish, and inside the wall, treat with a moisture-proof, odorless antibacterial solution that is safe for animals, which is sold in any hardware store.

Making a cage is not difficult if you follow the step-by-step instructions, which are very easy to use. You just need to take into account some of the nuances in the work.

  1. The cage frame must be placed only in an upright position. The animal is too active and therefore a wide and low house does not fit, it will be inconvenient to live in it.
  2. The materials that will be needed to make the cage must be safe. It is best to take wooden shelves. However, over time, they must be replaced, as the rodent loves to sharpen its teeth.
  3. To ventilate the cage, you will need a galvanized mesh with small cells, which is located on one or both sides.
  4. Glass used in the arrangement of doors or walls will help maintain order. In this case, it is imperative to take only high-quality fittings in order to avoid the loss of any elements that can easily injure the animal.
  5. It is advisable to install locks on the doors - magnetic or with a key. The chinchilla is very curious and loves to crawl through the crack. And if he accidentally hits the door while jumping, he can easily open it and quickly escape.
  6. Be sure to buy a special hanging hammock or sew it yourself. It is intended not only for entertainment but also for relaxation. You can swing on it with pleasure.
  7. The main thing is that the animals live comfortably in the cage, and the owners find it convenient to clean.

Chinchillas bring incredible joy to all family members. In addition, they live for a very long time, of course, if they eat right and spend a lot of time in motion. And this requires a lot of space. Consequently, store-bought cages are small and inconvenient in this case. As a result, preference is given to showcases made by ourselves.

It can be tricky for a chinchilla. Such a purchase also often becomes a tangible blow to the family budget. The best choice would be a do-it-yourself chinchilla cage - step-by-step instructions will help you cope with its manufacture, even without a lot of experience in carpentry work.

The chinchilla cage must be high so that the animal can move enough in it

Before taking on the drawings, you need to decide on the type of future design. Chinchillas are mobile animals that require a lot of space. The minimum cage size for one animal is 75x35x50cm. Remember that chinchillas cannot be kept alone, and the more animals, the larger the size of the product should be. It is also important to set aside enough space for the play area - these rodents like to jump, climb,.

If you plan to keep chinchillas in a private house, you can build a real home aviary. Fluffy animals also climb and climb well, so they will feel great in tall devices with shelves. If there is not enough space in the apartment, it is recommended to choose a vertical structure of several floors:

On the Internet you can see many photos of homemade cells and. Complex projects with interesting transitions and shelves can inspire work, but with a little experience it is better to choose a simple design. If necessary, in the future, the base frame can be easily built on by complicating the structure of the cage.

It looks like a cage with a second floor superstructure.

Materials and tools

You can use old furniture to create a cage.

To make a pet cage yourself, you first need to purchase everything you need for work. Materials for construction must be safe, natural wood is best suited. You can make a strong frame from bars, edged boards, lining, you will also need boards for shelves. Woods such as birch or pine are easy to process and inexpensive. You can also use chipboard or plywood for manufacturing.

To tighten the holes and windows, you need a metal mesh with small cells (about 2-2.5 cm). You can use ready-made metal sections with rods, or weld them yourself from wire. It is better to choose galvanized or high quality painted metal. Corrosion protection will extend the service life of the product, allow cleaning with household chemicals.

IMPORTANT: In the absence of funds to make a cage from scratch, you can reuse old unnecessary furniture - bedside tables, shelves, cabinets. It is enough to tighten the doors with a net and cut holes for ladders in the shelves. This design is very convenient and will cost you almost no cost.

Another version of the cage from old furniture

To work, you will also need a set of common woodworking tools:

  • saw-hacksaw;
  • jigsaw;
  • hammer;
  • drill and drill for wood;
  • stationery knife, marker;
  • scissors for metal;
  • ruler, building level.

It is important to take care of the fittings - in order for the doors to be securely locked, it is better to purchase ready-made locks in a furniture store. There you can also find guides for drawers and pull-out shelves, hinges and handles for doors, wheels for fixing to the bottom.

How to make a cage for a chinchilla with your own hands

After all the materials have been purchased, you can start making the structure. To make a cage at home, prepare a comfortable place to work in advance. The manufacturing steps are carried out in the following order:

  1. A drawing is made according to the measurements taken. Check the calculations well before cutting out the parts.
  2. A rectangular base is made from solid bars, in accordance with the dimensions of the drawing. From above it is sheathed with clapboard in one layer or a sheet of thick plywood is placed.
  3. If the installation of a removable pallet is not provided, the base must be treated with silicone sealant. This will protect the wood from absorbing liquids and odors.
  4. The frame is built up from vertical bars. They are attached at the corners of the base using self-tapping screws or long nails.
  5. The top of the frame is made of bars of the appropriate length. For the stability of the structure, you can also make several crossbars along the height of the walls. In the future, shelves can be attached to them.
  6. The walls and roof are tightened with a strong metal mesh using self-tapping screws with a wide head. To prevent the animals from getting hurt when trying to gnaw the sharp edges of the mesh, it is necessary to put a metal profile in place of the attachment.
  7. It is best to make several doors on different sides of the structure and a removable roof - this will facilitate cleaning. The frames are made of lining, the doors are fastened to metal hinges for the bedside tables.
  8. Shelves are installed - it is better to choose solid ones, with holes-hatches for ladders. So chinchillas can freely move from one floor to another, and shelters and toys can be placed on the shelves themselves.
  9. The back wall of the cage is usually covered with a solid sheet of chipboard or plywood. You can also close one of the side walls to protect the animals from drafts.
The structure of the cage must be raised above the floor to protect the pet from drafts

The structure must be raised to a level of at least 50 cm from the floor - this is necessary to protect heat-loving animals from the cold. To do this, you can either install strong legs from a bar, or assemble a pedestal stand. The extra space at the bottom is convenient for storing sawdust, feed, and other accessories for keeping chinchillas.

After the end of the work, the homemade cage is treated with special protective impregnations. Outside, the frame can be painted or varnished, but inside the walls are treated only with antibacterial and moisture-proof solutions that are safe for animals. You can buy them in a hardware store - you should choose products without a pungent smell.

If you decide to get yourself a pet, you should definitely think about where your pet will live. Of course, this place should be cozy and comfortable for a chinchilla, the health and life expectancy of the animal depends on it. A cage for a chinchilla is a question that should be taken care of even before you get yourself such a pet, so you need to understand all the intricacies of this topic.

What should be a cage for a chinchilla and where to place it?

Chinchillas are very mobile animals, especially at a young age, they like to jump high, climb on different shelves, and run, so the cage must be large enough to meet these needs of the animals. The height of the cage is especially important, for chinchillas, the higher the better. Experts believe that the optimal size of the cage should be about 1 meter in height, and at least half a meter in width and length.

In general, you can place the cage anywhere in the apartment, there are no clear rules on this, but there are some notes that will help you choose the right place for the chinchilla's house. The cage should not stand in a draft, as your pet can catch a cold, and a place near the battery is also not suitable, because the maximum temperature for a comfortable stay of chinchillas is 26 degrees. Your bedroom will not be the best place for a cage, because these rodents are active at night, they will simply interfere with your sleep.

How to set up a chinchilla cage?

In order for your pet to live comfortably in its cage, it is necessary to equip it correctly. You can do this yourself, the arrangement will not take much time and effort, you just need to know some rules. So, what must be in a cage for chinchillas:

  • House. This is an obligatory part of the cage; the chinchilla needs a house in order to retire and hide if necessary. It is desirable that it be made of wood or ceramics, 30 * 30 * 30 are considered ideal dimensions, an adult chinchilla may well climb into such a house, while it will be quite comfortable to be inside.
  • Shelves. Chinchillas love to jump on the shelves and sit there, so there should be a lot of them, at least 3 in the cage. It is best to use shelves made of wood, however, special plastic is also considered a good enough material for this. The shelves must be rough so that the legs of the chinchillas do not slip.
  • Drinking bowl. Anyone understands that a chinchilla must have clean drinking water in a cage. For a rodent, one drinker will be enough, you can buy it in a specialized pet store, it can be made of glass or plastic, it is best to take a ball version. The drinker is attached to the outside of the cage wall, you can attach it above the shelf, but better closer to the floor so that the chinchilla always has access to water.
  • Feeder. The ideal option would be a ceramic feeder, because the plastic feeder will be chewed by your pet on the very first day. The feeder can stand on the floor of the cage and can also be attached to the cage wall close to the floor.
  • Sennitsa. Chinchillas need to be given hay every day, however, it is not worth putting it on the floor, because this way it can get wet, and wet hay is very harmful to the stomach of this animal. Sennitsa can be a small tube with walls made of fine metal mesh, you should not buy a sennitsa in the shape of a ball, because a chinchilla can climb in there and get injured.
  • Running wheel ... The wheel is not an obligatory item in the chinchilla's cage, it can live without it. But with the wheel your pet will be much more fun, besides, running in it, the chinchilla can throw out the accumulated energy. If you nevertheless decide to purchase a wheel for your pet, then it should be made of wood, while the surface on which the chinchilla will run should be rough. The wheel should be about 40 centimeters in diameter so that the rodent can easily fit in it. The wheel must be firmly attached to the cage, be sure to check this, because if it comes off, it can lead to the death of the animal.
  • Toilet. Chinchillas go about their business not just anywhere, on the floor in a cage. In stores, a special one is sold, which is a tray, it must be placed at the bottom.
  • Stones ... Pet stores sell special stones with which chinchillas can sharpen their teeth and nails, as well as get some minerals from them. The stones must be attached to the cage wall, not only on the floor, but also above the shelf.
  • Hammock, tunnel. Some chinchillas simply do not use these attributes, so you may not need them. You need to decide on your own whether your pet needs these entertainment.

If you equip your chinchilla's cage correctly, then it will be happy and healthy, and, therefore, will live a long life with you.

How to make a chinchilla cage?

Of course, you can buy a cage at a pet store, however, it will be very good if you manage to make a cage for a chinchilla with your own hands, because such housing will cost you a small amount, moreover, it will meet all your requirements. It is best to make a wooden cage on your own.

When making a cage for a chinchilla, step-by-step instructions will be something like this. To begin with, you will need to prepare a drawing of the future cell, it is imperative to take into account the area norms for living, which is calculated in accordance with
