Acrylic paints for painting on wood. What paints to paint on wood: tips. Working with oil paint

Do you know what lonely young ladies do out of idleness and boredom when they get together? You won't guess anything.

This is a kind of creative experiment, the result of which I want to demonstrate to you in this unique report. See what beautiful things you can create with just a few hours of self-denial - wood painting. Today I want to show you how girls without any artistic training in just a few hours of painstaking creativity in front of my eyes created unique things. Each of their drawings can easily become an adornment of any wooden chest of drawers, wardrobe, chair, table, both outside and inside. In this case, the usual facade of an ordinary furniture box was used for painting, but in fact an ordinary piece of wood.

Let's start with the fact that in the endemic era of a severe and merciless economic crisis in the country, wood painting found its natural demanded niche, filling, as it turned out, the art of its design decor paths that everyone and everyone needs, a niche in which you can comfortably exist, survive and even completely to show off to any unemployed, partly creative person who finds himself unemployed, but what is there creative, any person from the street who has a couple of hours of free time.

The history of painting on wood goes into the distant, distant past. When people learned how to make household items and dishes from wood, they wanted to somehow decorate their lives. In those days, peoples believed in various deities, they had their own beliefs, they composed fairy tales and legends, and decorated their lives with images of the heroes of these works. Since ancient times, it was believed that painted things drove away evil and attracted good spirits to the house, create comfort and are attributes of luxury.

If earlier wooden products were decorated only with painting, now more and more new opportunities appear for this, for example, such as decoupage.

Initially, artisans used local raw materials common in this region as paints - clay, coal, chalk, and other mineral and vegetable substances. In areas close to the seas and oceans, a number of paints were made from crushed mollusks and even algae. Apparently, therefore, the painting of each region is still considered unique and always recognizable. Dry ground substances were necessarily mixed with some kind of binder - oils, drying oil or other viscous reagents for durability. In addition to the pictorial material, each nation had its own original painting symbolism, style and theme.

To date, there are a huge number of different types of painting, each is characterized by certain ornaments - Volkhovskaya, Severodvinskaya, Khokhloma, Gorodetskaya, Polkhov-Maidanskaya, Mezenskaya, Palekhskaya and others. If the materials for painting were unique, then the technique of drawing a picture on a tree was approximately the same everywhere.

Wood painting is an art requiring self-denial.

Basic rules for painting on wood:

Start.
Before starting work, it is necessary to prepare the surface of the wood. Surface preparation is reduced to its cleaning, light sanding and priming. In some cases, putty is used - in our time, usually, it is a mixture of PVA glue, sawdust and tint color. You can clean the surface with a brush, a slightly damp cloth, and in other ways. Sanded with sandpaper. Larger sandpaper is used for sanding wood in order to make the surface smooth and silky, so that the bonding process with subsequent decorative coating is more effective. Regardless of the type of sandpaper, wood can only be sanded along the fibers. After the surface is prepared, a protective coating is applied. For example, you can cover the surface with stain. Water, alcohol and oil stains are produced. Stains come in a variety of colors and shades, from dark to transparent. Diluted paint compositions for future painting or a solution of PVA glue with water were used as a primer.

The foundation.
When the surface is dry, you can apply the pattern. You can use direct painting or stencils. Screen painting is the finishing decoration.

The final.
When the painting is completed and dried, the work is varnished. The first layer of nitro varnishes, for the initial fixing of paints on wood. The second and third - colorless or tinted oil varnish, depending on the artist's intention. Each new layer of varnish must be applied to the completely dry previous one. At the end of the work, the decorative gouache painting must be varnished. You can use furniture types of varnishes, but there is also a more reliable and simple varnish - acrylic, it is good because it practically does not smell and dries fairly quickly.

6.
As already mentioned above, to prepare for painting, skills and talents are not required, some attention to detail is enough, the ability to work for quite a long time while sitting still, the necessary Paints, a picture for inspiration or for sketching.

7.
The surface of the furniture, if it is already covered with paintwork material, can be slightly, without fanaticism and extremely carefully sanded with fine-grained sandpaper, grain number of the order of 200-400, in which case you make the surface slightly porous, without peeling and scratching. The next logical step is to wipe off the resulting dust.

8.
You can cover the surface tightly in two layers with mineral or chalk paints that do not require priming, or you can prime with a special primer base on previously painted surfaces, and then paint with any tern, including acrylic. The main thing is that you understand the difference between mineral tern and acrylic tern. Acrylic - paint on a chemical acrylate basis, after drying, the color oxidizes and darkens, it also often needs multi-layer application, it lays flat, while mineral or chalk paints, on the contrary, brighten, have a dense texture, lay down voluminously, vintage. Both paint options require a final fixing layer after the artwork is completed. For acrylic paints it is an acrylic varnish, for mineral it is a natural soft light or dark wax for paints or a water-based varnish. This is very important, since acrylic-based varnish will simply come off in plates, like peeling from the face. Acrylic lacquer may conflict with mineral paint, be careful when choosing a finish. It is better to use wax for mineral paints, as it returns the original color of the paint, makes it pleasant to the touch, emphasizes relief and volume.

9.
The painting itself can be simplified by the fact that you break your conceived drawing into large pieces first: that is, Width, length, height, middle, and so on. You make marks on your prepared surface, then after an enlarged sketch, you can move on to working out the details, but for now also with a pencil. There are specially white pencils for a dark background, they disappear when mixed with paint. After sketching with a pencil, you begin to work with paint, first working through all the details with one color, then with the next, and so in layers, one color after another will fall on the surface with a pattern. The technique of drawing on furniture is similar to drawing on fabrics, it does not require the study of each individual element with all colors at once, namely, the layer-by-layer application of each color to the entire canvas of your drawing.

10.
It is also worth considering that paint and acrylic, and chalk dry quickly and practically do not mix, do all mixing in advance on the palette.
To simplify, you can use stencils and rulers with geometric shapes.

From time immemorial, mankind has painted various surfaces with paints - stones, wood, leather and other materials on which dyes lay. At the same time, a wide variety of materials were used as paint - clay of various colors, tree resin, soot. One of the most popular materials for painting is wood - many household items were originally made of wood, furniture, and the houses themselves were also wooden, and the desire for beauty has always been inherent in humanity, so they decorated the surrounding objects with everything that was at hand. Painting on wood with the help of high-quality acrylic paints is gaining particular popularity, as it allows you to plunge into the world of distant ancestors and escape from the stress and frantic rhythm of the modern world.

At the same time, it is not necessary to be a professional master in this or that type of painting - there are a large number of necessary materials and tools in stores that will help you master any technique in a fairly short time. If this is not enough, then various educational institutions will be happy to offer you to attend courses for beginners at a convenient time for you.

We study painting on wood with acrylic paints with a description of the work

Wood painting is most suitable for beginner artists working with acrylic paints - they are bright, easy to lay down and waterproof, while they practically do not smell and are easy to work with.

There are different types of painting that originated at different times and in different places in our country, but they all originate in ancient times, when people lived in harmony with nature and the world around them.

One of these types of painting is Khokhloma painting, in which the main elements are grass, flowers, berries, that is, the pictures reflect the entire plant world that surrounds a person. This type of painting got its name from the name of the village of Khokhloma, near which it originated.

Another popular folk painting technique originated in a small town on the Volga called Gorodets and was called Gorodets painting. A distinctive feature of this type of painting is that animals are always depicted in profile, and people in full face. The main theme of this type of painting is the everyday life of ordinary people - walks along city streets, fair festivities, weddings, and at the same time, the paintings are always saturated with bright colors that frame them in the form of garlands, wreaths or simply bouquets scattered throughout the picture.

In addition to these two types of wood painting, there is another decorative technique that is no less popular - Mezen painting. Its distinguishing features are the use of only two colors in the drawings - red and black, as well as a rather symbolic image of various elements (the main motifs are solar disks, rhombuses and crosses, which have certain meanings)

Let's take a closer look at wood painting using the example of a master class on decorating a wooden board. We will use acrylic paints, as the most convenient for work at the stage of acquaintance with this type of folk art. The board, in this case, is also the most convenient object from which you can begin to master the painting technique.

Master class on painting a wooden board with your own hands

Acrylic paints are very easy to work with, they fit well on a wooden surface and after drying they form a waterproof film, so the painted product can not be varnished.

Required materials and tools:

  • Wooden cutting board;
  • acrylic paint;
  • brushes;
  • Carbon paper (in order to transfer the drawing to the board).
Stages of painting a wooden board.

First you need to prepare the surface that you are going to paint. To do this, cover the board with an even layer of white paint - this is necessary in order to level the surface and saturate the pores of the wood, so further layers of paint will lay down more evenly.

While the board is drying, you can draw a sketch of the future drawing on paper. Of course, if your artistic skills allow you to draw directly on the board, then you can do without preliminary drawings.

We start coloring. To make a bright board, we will use paints of different colors and shades.

With a thin brush and black paint we make out the middle of the flowers, and with the help of white paint we paint berries, flower petals and leaves with thin lines.

A bright and colorful cutting board is ready. After drying, it can be varnished to better fix the paints, but if the product will perform only a decorative function, you can do without varnishing.

Wood painting is a great way to create unique products with acrylic paints with your own hands, which can be used in everyday life, made an interior decoration or presented to a loved one. The technology of this type of creativity is so simple that even a child can master it with a little help from adults.

Video on the topic of the article

In conclusion, we suggest you watch a few videos about painting various products with acrylic paints to give uniqueness and originality to things, as well as to the interior of your home.

Wood painting has many different recipes and, accordingly, recommended materials. I offer the simplest and most affordable, and most importantly, promising longevity option for your creation.

Board painted with gouache.

You will need gouache paints, PVA glue, a sheet of fine-grained sandpaper and a transparent wood varnish (parquet is also suitable, but it is sold in large jars, so it is more convenient to buy just a bottle in a hardware store). This is the main thing, but it is clear that you need brushes, a palette, and the wooden product itself, which is about to turn into a bright decor item.

I will illustrate this recipe using the example of a kitchen cutting board, but you can apply everything stated to any wooden product: a box, a spoon, a plate, a chest, a stool or a chest of drawers, as long as they are new and do not require additional work on grinding, degreasing, removing old ones. layers of paint or varnish. If the thing is old, then all of the above should be done.

The first stage is preparing the area.

So, you have a product ready for painting in your hands, and you need to start by determining the place that will go under the painting. In my board example, you just need to determine where the work surface will be, and which side will be painted. The side that is destined to become beautiful should be lightly rubbed with sandpaper.

Very often people complain that at the final stage, when varnishing, paints float right behind the brush. To prevent this from happening, before painting, you need to apply a layer of PVA glue directly to the surface that has just been cleaned with sandpaper. For convenience, in a small container, mix the glue and water approximately equally for each part and cover the board with this solution. Everything, the surface is ready.

The second stage is painting.

While the surface dries, you should decide what the composition will be in the format of the product and in what tones it will look more advantageous. By the way, if you intend to paint on a colored background, then it's time to mix the desired color with glue and cover the side of the board or paint your product with a colored solution. Give glue 50% to the solution.

In the given example, the painting is done directly on the tree (without a background) and the choice when creating the composition fell on such beautiful flowers.

We draw up a sketch based on these colors in the desired elongated format. The composition turned out like this.

Now the most difficult thing is to decide on the color scheme. If it is difficult to understand which colors will look best on your product, then you can use the spectral circle as a hint, or you can cut out multi-colored pieces from colored paper and simply apply them to the surface and see if they are lost, if they melt. If the colors lit up against your background, then this is it.

We transfer the drawing scheme from the sketch with a thin pencil line and, in fact, paint it by adding PVA glue to the paints mixed on the palette. Glue is a guarantee that the pattern will remain in place when varnished. 100% guarantee - tested more than once, and not only by me.

The third stage - we cover the painting with varnish.

If the painting is dry, then you can safely dip a large soft brush into the varnish and begin to gently varnish the surface. Make sure that there are no missed places, because where there is no varnish, the painting is not protected from water and other media. Walk at the first coating should be once - it is better not to rub the same place twice.

After two to three days, apply a second coat of varnish and allow two to three days to dry. Everything, the product is ready, and believe that the painting is now not afraid of water, pollution, or time.

Its history goes back to the 2nd century BC. e., when people learned to make iron, and from it various knives, scrapers, saws and other cutting tools.

However, it was not enough just to carve some product out of wood, a person wanted the result of his work to look beautiful. This is how ancient wood paintings appeared, primitive and far from artistic, but the birth of art took place. In those distant times, paints already existed, it remained to apply them properly.

Art painting on wood

The folk crafts that exist today for the manufacture of household items are based on a variety of techniques. Wooden products are presented in several categories: first of all, these are dishes and kitchen utensils. The second list includes objects that embody the fine arts. These are painted panels, interior decorations, various household items. And finally, the third category - vintage style wooden furniture, painted in a special way antique. Art painting on wood as such is used in all three cases. The value of products is undeniable, because professionals work on them.

Varieties

There are several types of wood paintings and differ in belonging to a particular region, as well as in style. The drawing can be plot or ornamental.

Types of painting on wood:

  • Mezenskaya;
  • Polkhovskaya;
  • Khokhloma;
  • Gorodetskaya;
  • Palekh;
  • Severodvinskaya;
  • Petrikovskaya.

The main types of painting on wood are listed. Each variety contains "branded" features that give the product an additional appeal.

Mezen painting

Mezen painting (or, as it is also called, palashchelskaya) is the painting of household items: ladles, boxes, spinning wheels, benches and kitchen tables. These artistic traditions appeared in the lower reaches of the Mezen River around 1815.

Mezen painting consists mainly of ornamented images of forest dwellers: deer and elks, wolverines, foxes and cubs. All images are impersonal and bear the stamp of static. The friezes, made up of repeatedly repeating figures painted in bright colors, give the impression of festivity and defiant luxury, since the colorful stripes of ornaments do not fit in with the wretched furnishings of the Russian dwelling. A primitive spinning wheel, painted in the Mezen style and sparkling with colors in a dark corner, only emphasized the desolation of the upper room.

Palekh

Palekh painting is a folk art craft that appeared in pre-Petrine times. At that time, the village of Palekh in the Ivanovo province was famous for its icon painters. This art reached its peak at the end of the 18th century. Paleshians, in addition to painting icons, were engaged in the restoration of cathedrals and churches, took part in the design of the aisles of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra and the Novodevichy Convent.

Until the beginning of the 20th century, the craft of Palekh painting flourished, the revolutionary storms of 1905 and 1917 almost destroyed the delicate folk art. Since after the 17th year all churches were abolished by ignorant representatives of the communist authorities, there was nothing to paint, and Poleshan artists created an artel that produces artistic wood products.

Soon, the first work in the Palekh style was created in the Moscow workshop. On a wooden box covered with black lacquer, Ivan Tsarevich, who has left the royal chambers to freedom, meets the Firebird. The whole picture was painted in gold and cinnabar - it was impossible to take your eyes off the drawing.

Currently, Palekh wood painting is a deeply traditional art, with the only difference being that natural wood has been replaced with papier-mâché. Now products with Palekh painting are not only beautiful, but also light.

Khokhloma

An ancient folk craft that was developed in the villages of the Nizhny Novgorod province in the 17th century. The village of Khokhloma became the center, in which the Old Believers, persecuted for their faith, gathered. Among the settlers there were many icon painters who brought with them the fine skill of painting, calligraphic writing and many examples of floral ornaments.

Local residents living in Khokhloma and nearby villages knew how to turn wood, but they did not know how to draw. So it turned out that the wooden utensils, carved on the spot, were painted by alien artists. This is how the art of Khokhloma painting appeared, which turned into one of the most famous art crafts in Russia.

Wood carvers not only carved dishes and plates, they soon learned how to carve spoons and ladles, the classic "brothers". Usually the bucket was made in the shape of a swan, and a dozen scoops were hung on the sides. The material was linden wood, which by its nature has no fibers and is easily cut in all directions.

Khokhloma painting consists of four primary colors: black, gold, red and green. Black and gold are used as the background, while red and green, together with their hues, make up the drawing itself. The theme for a drawing in the Khokhloma style is most often rowan berries, strawberries, various flowers and herbal plants. Sometimes the artist uses images of birds, fish and small animals.

Carving and drawing

Russian folk crafts (such as Gorodets or Khokhloma) are wood products covered with a pattern. First, master cabinetmakers make blanks from selected wood, the so-called "linen", and then the artists cover them with a pattern. Carving and painting on wood are inseparable in this case - they complement each other. The most common type of painted blank is the Russian matryoshka. For its manufacture, the turning method of carving is used, when the product is turned, polished and then signed. This souvenir is known all over the world and has been in high demand for many years.

Is it possible to learn painting on wood?

Folk art crafts belong to the fine arts and require some training, but anyone who has patience and perseverance can master the basic principles of coloring products. There are special techniques that are called "Wood painting for beginners", which include familiarization with the process and practical work. Initially, classes are generalized, and after acquiring skills, you can switch to a specific artistic style, for example, Gorodets. In any case, painting on wood is a fascinating creative process for beginners.

Coloring methods

Natural wood is a material that requires careful pre-treatment. The surface for painting should be smooth, without peeling and cracks. The workpiece is first polished with an emery cloth, and then covered with a special primer, which fills all the microscopic cracks and evens out small irregularities. Larger defects can be eliminated with putty. After pre-treatment, the workpiece must be dried well.

Wooden folk crafts are distinguished by bright, intense colors. The drawings usually contrast with the background, which is black or bright red. For coloring products, tempera or artistic gouache paints are used, which have good hiding power. Acrylic painting on wood gives the most stable results, especially if the drawing is covered with a transparent nitro-lacquer on top. Products after such processing become resistant to abrasion and do not change their color.

Wood painting (photos of finished products are presented on the page) is a kind of fine art that is rooted in the distant past, but lives and flourishes in the present.

Painting on wood matryoshka

One of the oldest types of arts and crafts is the well-known artistic decorative painting on wood. Recall Gorodets, Petrikov, Khokhloma painting. Russian craftsmen have long been famous for their ability to paint dishes and furniture. Images are ornamental or plot.

For painting, it is possible to buy ready-made wood blanks, which is convenient for beginners, or you can paint wooden hangers, brushes, cutting boards, spatulas, spoons, bracelets, caskets, even gouache floors with your own hands.

Gouache painting technology on wood for beginners

1. It is desirable that the surface of the wood for painting be even and smooth, if this is not the case, then you need to preliminarily polish her. One thing - regardless of the type of sandpaper, you should always sand along the wood fibers.

2. To protect the top layer of wood, it is applied wood stain. Mordants come in different shades, colors - light, dark, transparent. I have never done this before, I left it as is.

3. The next step is wood surface primer. If not all the tree on top is painted, but only partially, then the primer also needs to be applied only to these places. As a primer, I usually used white acrylic paint.

An interesting method of restoring a small round table top with a simple but sophisticated Art Nouveau floral ornament. Ornament with tulips can be made both with acrylic and gouache. The technology is the same. Here in detail, for beginners, it is shown how, in what order, the repeating elements of a circular pattern are painted. This is a kind of master class in drawing a picture on a tree - decorating furniture with paints.

4.Paint we will be on top of the primer.
The contours of the painting on the tree are applied, for example, with a pencil. You can use different colors, including acrylic and oil. We were once taught to work on a wooden surface gouache. You can add a little PVA glue to gouache.

Russian painting on wood "Khokhloma"

5. At the end of the work, decorative gouache painting is necessary varnish. Then the drawing on the tree will play in a completely different way. I used to use furniture (which was at home). Now I have acrylic, it is good because it practically does not smell, it dries pretty quickly. I still advise you to work with him in a ventilated area. I use the same varnish as a coating when making eggshell mosaics.

It is better to apply a varnish coating on top of the painting in several layers, before applying a new layer, the previous one must dry completely. The room where the varnished work dries should not be dusty, otherwise all the dust particles will stick to the wet coating. On the street, too, you should not dry the varnish, the wind will blow - all the fine dirt brought by it will remain forever at your work.

Norwegian painting of wooden objects

I like Scandinavia, probably more because of its nature, it pulls not to the south, but to the north - there's nothing to be done. In August I visited Norway. There she spied on the national decorative painting of wooden utensils and interior details - walls, doors, furniture, chests and caskets. I am happy to share what I see. Drawings on wood and wooden objects are still a little different from ours, Russian ones.

We all know our native Khokhloma painting. It is interesting to compare with other, for example, Scandinavian versions of this art. There they also have their own name - "rosemaling".

The northern country, rich in forests, also made a lot of wood there, life was decorated as far as possible, so here you can undoubtedly find a lot in common with Russia.

Simple drawings on wood

I started with simple objects, simple drawings on a small tree - small boards, spatulas, photos of which you see below. Later I even made a tiny icon, I copied it from the original, the work is very delicate, but, unfortunately, I didn’t keep it.

On the other hand, several old kitchen cutting boards and spatulas have been preserved from the time of visiting the course of decorative gouache painting on wood for beginners, one with a strawberry pattern (primary colors red, green) remained as bright as before, but the other partially changed its color, and there where the colors are mixed.
Over time, they became an incomprehensible dirty color.

A simple pattern "from the head" of wood painting

So, in the beginning there were flat drawings on the objects of their tree. Next, I tried more interesting forms for painting - voluminous. Like this one:

I also painted the wooden hanger with my own hands. I invented an ornament for decoration out of my head, maybe not very well, but how it happened. It is still used for its intended purpose at my mother's house, and what is surprising is that it has not changed a bit over the years! Paint and varnish adhere well to the surface, the drawing on the tree is completely preserved, time has not damaged the gouache painting.

Painting objects on wood is an interesting activity, any beginner can start doing this on their own, the result is very decorative, colorful and durable.

You can paint not only nesting dolls and boards. There is no need to invent any pattern, everything is on a whim. The main thing here is not painting, but carving, or rather, carving a bird figurine from wood. It is made from a thick branch, the bark on the wings is left. When the blank-form is ready, it remains only to color the finished product so that it looks like a real bird.

Coffee or coffee table made of wood with decorative hand-painted oriental Moroccan style. It looks very colorful, stylized and decorative. Oriental-style coffee tables with ornaments are typical for Moroccan-style interiors. Complement your interior with such a detail, decorated with gouache painting.

If not everyone is able to make a birdhouse or a dining room on their own, then every beginner can paint a birdhouse with acrylic or gouache - apply a drawing, and then varnish it - make it a decorative element to decorate a garden or a boring winter landscape outside the window. Try doing this with your kids! You'll like it.

Painting on the material is also interesting. Of course, on wood, decorative patterns are more durable, but even here, not everything is so bad with the service life of a knitted product. You just need to follow some rules for drawing and processing the finished thing, which are written on dyes. Nina, who has already painted a lot of decorative products, talks about the features of the work, which can be useful for beginners.
