Warning

If you're expecting me to tell you about the terrible health risks that smokers face, or what... long years smoking they spend a fortune on it, or that smoking is a vulgar, disgusting habit, and you yourself are a stupid, weak-willed mattress, then I must disappoint you. Such tactics have never helped me quit smoking myself, and if it could help you, you would have quit long ago.

My method, which I will henceforth call the “Easy Way,” works in a completely different way. You may find it difficult to believe some of what I am about to say. However, by the time you read this book, you will not only believe it, but you will even wonder how you were ever so brainwashed that you believed in something else. There is a common misconception that we ourselves make this choice - to smoke. Smokers no more decide to become smokers than alcoholics decide to become alcoholics, or heroin addicts decide to become drug addicts. Yes, it’s true, we decided to smoke our first test cigarettes. From time to time I decide to go to the cinema, but I certainly don't decide to spend many years in the cinema.

Please look back at your life. Have you ever made a conscious decision that at certain times in your life you would not be able to enjoy dinner or meeting friends without smoking? What if you can’t concentrate or cope with stress without a cigarette? At what stage of your life did you decide that you need cigarettes not only for social gatherings, but that you need to have them in your pocket all the time, or you will feel insecure and even panic?

You, like any other smoker, have been lured into the most terrible and ingenious trap that man and nature have invented together. There is not a single parent on the planet, smoker or non-smoker, who would like the idea of their children smoking. This means that all smokers regret ever starting smoking: before becoming addicted to smoking, no one needs cigarettes to enjoy food or cope with stress.

At the same time, all smokers want to continue smoking. No one can force us to smoke; consciously or unconsciously, we make this decision ourselves. If there was a magic button that, by pressing it, smokers could wake up the next morning as if they had never lit their first cigarette, then the only smokers on earth would be teenagers still in the experimental stage. The only thing that keeps us from quitting smoking is FEAR!

Fear that on the path to freedom we will have to endure an indefinitely long period of suffering, deprivation and unsatisfied desires. Fear that without a cigarette, without this small support, neither food nor meeting with friends will ever bring us pleasure. Fear that we will never be able to concentrate, cope with stress, or have self-confidence. Fear that our personality and character will change. But most of all we are afraid that we have become slaves forever and will never be completely free, but will spend the rest of our lives dreaming of an occasional cigarette. If you, like me, once upon a time, have already tried everything traditional ways If you quit smoking and have gone through all the pain of what I call the “willpower method”, then you are not only influenced by this fear, but you are also sure that you will never be able to quit smoking.

If you are afraid, confused, or feel that now is not the right time to quit smoking, let me assure you that your fears and confusion are caused by fear. The same fear that is not removed with the help of cigarettes, but is only generated by them. After all, you didn’t make the decision to fall into the nicotine trap? But like all traps, it is designed so that you cannot escape from it. Ask yourself: when you experimentally smoked your first cigarette, did you decide to become a smoker for the entire period of time that you have been smoking since then? So when are you going to quit? Tomorrow? IN next year? Stop deceiving yourself! The trap is designed to keep you in it for life. What other reason do you think all other smokers don't quit before smoking kills them?

This book was first published by Penguin more than ten years ago, and has become a bestseller every year since. All these ten years I have been corresponding with readers. As follows from this correspondence, the effectiveness of the method exceeded my wildest expectations. In addition, reader letters have revealed two issues that concern me. Later I will dwell in more detail on the second of them, and the first follows from the letters I received. Here are typical examples:

“I did not believe the statements you made and I apologize for doubting you. It was very easy and pleasant - everything was as you said. I have given copies of your book to all my smoking friends and relatives, but I can’t understand why they don’t read it.”

“Eight years ago, a friend of mine who was a smoker gave me your book, but I only got around to reading it now. I only regret one thing: I wasted eight years.”

“I just finished reading The Easy Way. It's only been four days and I already feel so wonderful! I'm sure I'll never want to smoke again. I first started reading your book five years ago, got halfway through and panicked. I knew that if I continued reading, I would have to quit smoking. How stupid I was!”

An easy way to lose weight

Anne Emery, Ken Pimblett, John Kindred, Janet Caldwell and a squirrel

Preface

Research in the field of medicine constantly expands our understanding of the occurrence and development of diseases. However, we still do not know how to use the knowledge we already have to fight numerous diseases and avoid premature death (which we so often have to face). People started talking about the dangers of smoking back in the days when the connection between the mortality of doctors and their addiction to smoking was first discovered. It turned out that lung cancer is almost always associated with smoking.

The physician has long had a responsibility to encourage patients to quit smoking and to healthy image life in general. Unfortunately, many doctors do not have enough time and energy for this work. The authority of doctors is not as great as the influence of cigarette advertising, aimed primarily at young people.

I was introduced to Allen Carr by one of his patients, who once surprised me with information about the existence easy way quit smoking. Since then, I have recommended Allen Carr's THE EASY WAY to Quit Smoking to all my patients and have seen amazing success with the technique. Interest in it prompted me to personally explore the features of this approach.

Having helped many people who want to quit smoking, Allen Carr has transformed his experience into an effective technique that is also useful for those who want to quit smoking. excess weight, - many people are now concerned about this problem. Having studied Allen Carr's approach to such a serious issue, I was surprised to find myself almost involuntarily drawn to adopt his wisdom. Positive results It didn’t take long for me to wait: now it’s easier for me to move, for example, on the tennis court, I feel more alert and healthy. I am sincerely glad about this change, although before I was not at all worried about a few extra pounds around the waist. Your acquaintance with Allen Carr's book will be a revelation, a true discovery; you will see for yourself how simply the problem of excess weight can be solved.

Dr MICHAEL BRAY, MBBS Chemistry, Lecturer, College of General Practitioners

An easy way to lose weight

This book, strictly speaking, should be entitled "The easy way to weigh exactly what you want." But such a name would be too long.

If nothing human is alien to you, then you are very likely worried about being overweight. However, please note: my method, which I will henceforth call “THE EASY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT,” is equally effective for those who want to lose weight and those who want to gain weight. Observing WEIGHT - and this is the essence of the matter - is of secondary importance compared to the main purpose of the method. This goal is extremely selfish and simple - just ENJOY LIFE!

But how can you enjoy life if you constantly feel lethargic, tired and deprived, worried and tormented by remorse for the damage and suffering you have caused to yourself, both mental and physical - all these consequences of excess weight?

You probably already know that I became famous a few years ago for developing not only a simple but also an enjoyable way to quit smoking, suitable for any smoker. I am now considered an internationally recognized expert in nicotine addiction recovery. Smokers who have used my method and understood how it works call me and my students the only real experts in this matter.

I later discovered that the same method (with one notable exception) is no less effective in eliminating any addictions that are primarily psychological in nature, including alcoholism and addiction to other types of drugs. Many would-be experts on such addictions consider the main problem to be addiction to certain substances and the physical symptoms that accompany abstinence from them. So they are trying to solve the problem chemically- selection of substitutes. In fact, the problem has a simple and easy psychological solution.

It is well known that today a billion-dollar business is built on the problem of combating obesity. Every week another celebrity advertises a videotape, a book or exercise machine, a set of exercises or a completely new diet that will miraculously solve your weight problems. I am convinced that there is a very close physical and psychological connection between smoking and nutrition, and the similarities between quitting smoking and losing weight are even more striking. Both the smoker and the dieter suffer from a feeling of impending schizophrenia. In their brains there is a constant struggle between “for” and “against” with varying degrees of success. The smoker's arguments, on the one hand, - “It’s a dirty, disgusting habit, it’s killing me, costing me a fortune and enslaving me,” with another - “This is my pleasure, my support, my company.” A dieter convinces himself: “I’m fat, flabby, unhealthy, I look terrible and I feel even worse.” And then he objects to himself: “But how I love to eat!” Therefore, you have the right to assume that I was just clinging to profitable business and now I'm cashing in on my own reputation.

I assure you, this conclusion is infinitely far from the truth. Vice versa, for a long time The notable exception in my work that I mentioned earlier was weight management. For years I was of the opinion that my method was not suitable for weight tracking - but, as it turns out, I was wrong.

And I could very well get rich from my reputation in other ways. I received dozens of offers to advertise the most miscellaneous goods, including for weight loss. And I rejected all these offers, and not because I am fabulously rich and do not need additional financial income: I simply value my reputation and am ready to defend it as fiercely as a lioness protects her cubs. Plus, I've never seen an ad featuring a famous person that didn't look fake. I officially declare: “THE EASY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT” is not an advertisement of other people’s ideas. Just like “THE EASY WAY TO QUIT SMOKING” - this is my method. I was confident in the effectiveness of the smoking cessation method even before I tried it. You will soon see that “THE EASY WAY TO LOSE WEIGHT” will work before you finish reading this book.

Most people gain weight when they quit smoking, but I lost almost 13 kg in six months. Regular physical exercise I combined it with the F-Plan diet. I understood that I couldn’t do it without willpower and discipline, and yet this process gave me pleasure. On early stages it is very similar to volitional attempts to quit smoking. If your determination is unshakable, a sense of self-satisfied masochism prevents you from giving in to temptation. While losing excess weight was the main goal of my life, everything went like clockwork. The trouble was that, as with the volitional method of quitting smoking, my determination gradually began to weaken: using any excuse, I abandoned both exercise and diet, and the weight began to grow again.

If you smoke and want to quit, but you think that Allen Carr is a hypnotist and with the help of the book only easily zombified people can quit smoking, then please take five minutes to this post.

I decided to write it for the following reason. 2 days after I quit smoking after reading a book at a rapid pace, I began to invite my smoking friends to accept this book as a gift from me, and it’s surprising that I heard in response the words: “This will not help me,” “This is a zombie.” , “160 toilet hours”, etc. in different variations, but with the same meaning. I remembered myself 5 years ago when I first heard about this book. I said: “Pfff, this is for weaklings, you can’t hypnotize me with this,” and completely forgot about it for the time being. Yes, it seemed to me that this was hypnosis, zombification, neurolinguistic programming, similar to religious brochures that are thrown into Mailbox. But last weekend, while reading a book (by the way, for the second time in my life), it seemed to me that I understood the mechanics of the “easy way” and the reason for its high effectiveness. And maybe I’ll say captain’s things now, but suddenly not...

It seems to me that the “easy way” is based on the mechanics of replacing some connections in the brain with others. What does it mean? Everyone who smokes and tried to quit at least once (and this expression is equivalent to the expression “everyone who smokes”) knows that when you quit simply because everything is boring, harmful, blah blah, then it doesn’t last long. As soon as a situation arises in your life when you usually smoke, you start poking around in your brain and thinking: “Hmm, how can I handle this difficult, nervous, terrible situation?” And you come to one conclusion: smoke. And this is natural, because you have no other connections with this situation in your brain. The morning decision to quit “because gladiolus” did not create any new connections in the brain with overly exciting or overly tiring situations. Therefore, morning (and in some cases, like mine in recent months, every morning) decisions to quit smoking do not work. They do not have replacement mechanisms.

By the way, American endocrinologist with Indian roots Deepak Chopra writes about the replacement mechanism in more detail in the book “Freedom from Habits”. Thus, he describes a situation when a girl suffering from heroin addiction came to see him. She said that the drug for her is the only way to bring at least a little joy into her life, make it less boring, and so on. The author invited her to remember herself as a child, to remember what brought her the same emotions as a child. She had to think for a long time, but in the end she remembered that she really loved going to the stables with her parents and riding horses. She liked to stroke their manes, look into their big eyes, feel unity with them, freedom and boundless happiness. After this memory, they went to the stables, where the girl remembered all those childhood emotions and realized that happiness can be brought not only by drugs, but also by many other things, without killing you. Those. we can say that the brain has created new useful connections, replacing the suicidal old ones.

Of course, it won't be horses or a skydive for everyone. Maybe someone in childhood liked to climb trees or assemble houses from blocks, bake figurines from clay or look at their parents' books. Everyone has their own mechanism for creating new connections. And you can take the time to find your connections and break your bad habits through this self-improvement. This is why, for example, I consider it at least temporarily effective to give up habits when a new relationship begins or when people move to another city. The old connections may remain, but the scenery is changing, as a result of which situations that previously led to smoking are less likely to arise.

You can work on yourself and create new connections for yourself instead of old ones and without resorting to Carr’s book. The simple fact is that he has already done everything for you =) He very carefully analyzed a specific particular case of a specific bad habit: he wrote a list of situations that lead to smoking, he wrote a list of replacement connections for each of these situations, in fact, he wrote out an algorithm for your behavior when you want to smoke again (thoughts that you need to scroll through your head to speed up the creation of new connections , feelings that should be evoked in yourself in order to speed up the creation of connections, etc.). The secret to smoking while reading a book is that until the end of the book you don't have the full arsenal to create new connections in your brain. And if you quit while reading, then you may find yourself unarmed in some unforeseen situation and start smoking again.

By the way, after you quit, thoughts about smoking don’t go away, you also sometimes feel uneasy difficult situation you want to drag on, but thanks to the fact that you already have a full arsenal of protective equipment, you can easily overcome this desire. Something like this.

In general, Carr has done an incredibly painstaking job of analyzing the entire mechanism of the smoking habit. And that’s why I think his book is worth reading if you smoke and want to quit, even if you’ve already read it and it didn’t help before. Perhaps it will help now.
