History of the profession

Surgery is literally translated from Greek as “work of the hands.” And although surgery was known both in Ancient Egypt (craniotomy) and in Ancient India(100 first surgical instruments), and in the Ancient East (Avicenna’s works on the internal structure of man), the founder of this discipline is considered to be Hippocrates with his treatises on sepsis, fractures, tetanus and abscesses.

In the Middle Ages, knowledge about man was punishable by death, and surgery, like all medicine, degraded, but with the Renaissance (from about the 15th century) came new stage. At that time, such famous surgeons as Paracelsus, Pare, Harvey appeared, who created directions and schools in surgery, the main postulates of which have not lost their relevance today. In 1667, the Frenchman Denis performed the first blood transfusion, giving a new impetus to the development of the profession.

Over the next centuries, surgery developed rapidly: anatomical atlases appeared, ways of spreading infections were discovered, asepsis and antisepsis, pain relief were born, and penicillin was discovered. Then they worked fruitfully and Russian doctors N. Pirogov, S. Botkin, N. Sklifosofsky, I. Pavlov. Hospitals are named after them today, and medical students learn from their textbooks. And today Russia has someone to be proud of: S. Fedorov, L. Bockeria, V. Shumakov, N. Bekhtereva, L. Roshal and a whole galaxy of their students - famous surgeons.

In the 21st century, low-traumatic, minimally invasive surgery is rapidly developing, robotics, new materials that replace human vessels and tissues, endoprostheses, and remote surgical interventions are entering the scene.
