Microlax for newborns

In a child who has just been born, the functions of the gastrointestinal tract have not yet been fully adjusted, the enzyme system does not work well, and the muscles are underdeveloped small intestine. This is what causes intestinal colic. And if the baby is bottle-fed, then in addition to colic, he may develop constipation, which is easily eliminated in babies who are breastfed. breastfeeding, mom's diet.

According to doctors, a person's intestines should be emptied daily, but this is ideal. In fact, all people go to the toilet differently, some every day, while others only once every four days. The same is true for children’s bodies. Only a newborn child can go to the toilet eight times a day, but by the age of one year, bowel movements become less frequent, up to three times a day.

However, it happens that the baby cannot go to the toilet for several days. As a result, the baby begins to be capricious, pain appears in his stomach, which subsides after the gases pass. Baby's stool resembles sheep's stool and is hard and dry. All this indicates that the child has become constipated.

In the zone increased risk Children who eat formula are more likely to develop constipation. Therefore, the Microlax enema in this case becomes simply irreplaceable. An additional advantage of using this drug in newborns is that it does not have side effects. A microenema may not be suitable for a child only in case of individual intolerance to the drug.

Benefits of using microenemas

The laxative Microlax has several undeniable advantages, which include:

  1. Ease of use. The drug is available in convenient soft tubes with a rectal tip (the method of use is described below).
  2. Safe components included in the composition. The product consists of sorbitol, sorbitol, sodium citrate and glycerin. Under their influence, stool begins to liquefy, and the intestines quickly empty.
  3. Enough quick impact. The effect occurs within 15 minutes after administration of Microlax. However, stool can be observed after half an hour to an hour.
  4. Microlax enema has an effect (acts) at the local level. The drug is absorbed only in accumulated feces and the walls of the rectum. The components of Microlax do not enter the bloodstream, so they cannot have any effect. negative influence on the body as a whole.
  5. Acceptable price. Today you can buy a package of four microenemas at almost any pharmacy for only 200 rubles. Which is quite affordable for parents of newborn children.

For children over one year old

In children older than one year, Microlax can also be used successfully, as in newborns. At this age, children are very reluctant to allow candles to be inserted into their butts and enemas to be given. But there are many reasons for constipation in children aged two to three years. We can list just a few of them, which are the most common:

  1. Poor nutrition. The baby's diet should contain a lot of raw fruits and vegetables, bread, dried fruits, fermented milk products, vegetable oil, better than olive.
  2. Parents' mistakes. If a child has problems with stool associated with impaired colon motility, then he should be fed in a special way. It is necessary to exclude from his diet jelly, broth, compotes from quince, pear and blueberry, pomegranate and strong tea.
  3. Violation of bowel movements. If the baby cannot go to the toilet at the same time, then parents should start putting him on the potty every morning, immediately after the baby has had breakfast. After some time, the child will get used to “sitting” on the potty and he will develop a certain routine.
  4. Lack of fluid. If there is little fluid in the child’s body, this will inevitably lead to constipation. Therefore, the baby must be given good water. You can offer your child water, tea, juice, etc.
  5. Physiological characteristics of the child’s body. Some babies are born with pathologies such as a bent gallbladder, an extra loop in the intestine, etc. In this case, you must definitely undergo medical examination and consult a pediatric gastroenterologist.
  6. Overheating of the child. If you wrap your baby too much, he will sweat. And along with sweat, moisture will also leave the body, the lack of which leads to constipation.
  7. Hereditary factor. No matter how ridiculous it may sound, constipation can also be hereditary. Therefore, if mom or dad had people in their family who were prone to constipation, then the likelihood of constipation in the baby increases greatly.

There are many other factors that directly affect the occurrence of constipation. These include prematurity, difficulties at the time of childbirth, medication use by both the mother and the baby, decreased muscle tone, and food allergy, and much more.

General composition of the drug

Another advantage of Microlax is that its dosage cannot be exceeded, since there is a special mark on the applicator. And even if the parents inadvertently introduced a little more than prescribed, then no negative impact The drug still won't work. Therefore, there is no need to panic and run to see a doctor.

Microlax, as the instructions say, contains three active components, which are the main ones:

  1. Sodium citrate.
  2. Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate 70%.
  3. Sorbitol solution 70%.

And three additional components:

  1. Glycerol.
  2. Sorbic acid.
  3. Water.

If we talk about the dosage of Microlax, it is used equally in both newborns and adults - just one tube per dose. Just remember that the method of application differs - children under three years old need to insert the tip to a certain mark, but children over three years old need to insert it completely, which is also described in the instructions.

From the instructions you can learn that microenemas can be used quite often, because no cases of drug overdose have been identified. However, experts recommend refraining from daily use of the drug so that the baby can independently improve the act of defecation.

How often to take

Many mothers ask the same question - how much does it cost to use Microlax enemas and suppositories? This question can be answered as follows - Microlax is not a treatment for constipation and should only be used to emergency assistance. Therefore, your best decision would be to use the drug only when the baby cannot go to the toilet for two or three days and experiences discomfort. Don’t forget about the child’s individuality, because perhaps your little one will only need one trip to the toilet in four days.

Analogues of Microlax

We all know that many drugs have analogues. As for Microlax for newborns, it has no analogues in the form of a microenema. However, there are a number of products that can also be used for infants and older children. But they are all available in other dosage forms.

The following remedies can help with constipation problems:

  1. Glycerin suppositories. They also act only on the large intestine itself, having a laxative effect. Their use is possible from the first days of life.
  2. "Guttalax." This product is available in the form of a suspension. However, it has an age limit (can only be taken from 2 years old) and some contraindications related to the baby’s health, all of which are also described in the instructions.
  3. "Duphalac". This drug is also available in the form of a suspension, and it can be given to children under three years of age, having carefully studied the contraindications described in the instructions.

No matter how good all the remedies for constipation are, it is best to start not with taking them, but with correcting your diet. Of course, this is not applicable for bottle-fed infants, but it is quite achievable for children who have already tasted their first complementary foods. For children suffering from constipation, it is recommended to use prune compote, freshly squeezed beetroot and carrot juice, massage the baby’s tummy, let him move actively, do not overheat him and teach him to go to the toilet by the hour. Older children can eat prunes, nibble carrots, and eat soups with beets themselves. This method much safer to take medicines.

However, it is also worth remembering that Small child not yet an adult organism with which to conduct experiments. Therefore, it is best for parents to consult a specialist who will help not only choose medicine, but also adjust the child’s lifestyle and nutrition.

The child did not poop after the enema - what is the reason

Sometimes it happens that the baby cannot poop even after Microlax. If stool does not appear within an hour after use, then you need to place the baby on his tummy and give him something to drink. plain water. If the baby is truly constipated, then defecation will definitely occur. But if the baby is completely calm, he is not capricious and does not cry, then, most likely, his intestines are simply not completely full yet, and there is no point in waiting for a bowel movement.

Therefore, parents should remember that Microlax must be used correctly and at the right time. If all the tips are followed, then you can achieve excellent results– the baby will not cry or strain, his sleep will normalize and his appetite will be restored.

Many newborns and infants are faced with such an unpleasant condition as constipation. This cannot but upset parents, because the child is still so small and defenseless, and he already has to endure this.

Therefore, it is very important to know what can help in this situation. Based on the instructions for use and reviews, we want to talk in more detail about a drug such as Microlax, which has established itself as a safe, easy-to-use and fast-acting remedy for constipation in children and adults.

The main indications for use are:

  • Constipation in newborns and infants, provoked by a change in the mother's diet, if she is breastfed, intolerance to formula or the introduction of complementary foods.
  • Constipation that occurs with hemorrhoids.
  • Preparation of the gastrointestinal tract before various studies.

It is very important that the newborn’s stool is normal and timely. In the first weeks of life, the child may go to the toilet several times, and the stool should be light and mushy.

If the baby has dense, thick stool, and there is a time when he may not go to the toilet for days, then parents need to be wary and look for the cause of this condition. You also need to make sure that bowel movement occurs as quickly as possible. This is exactly what this drug can help with.

Microlax for newborns - composition, instructions for use, dosage

This is a medicine that belongs to a group of laxatives used to treat constipation in children and adults. The main components are:

  • Sorbitol. Sorbitol solution improves intestinal function by increasing its size.
  • Sodium lauryl sulfoacetate additionally irritates the intestinal walls and pushes out feces.
  • Sodium citrate normalizes the newborn's water balance and saturates stool so that it is soft and easily excreted from the body.

Auxiliary components include:

  • sorbic acid;
  • water;
  • glycerol

Microlax for newborns is not available in the form of suppositories, but in the form of a microenema, which is a tube with a flexible applicator containing 5 ml of thick viscous liquid. This form is very convenient for use, especially for newborn babies. 1 package contains 4 microenemas.

At what age can Microlax be used?

According to the instructions, it is allowed to be used from birth if the newborn has a problem with constipation. The fact is that the components of the drug are not absorbed by the intestinal mucosa, do not enter the bloodstream and are excreted from the body unchanged. Therefore, it is considered harmless to the child’s body.

How many times a day can Microlax be used for a newborn?

Many parents ask the question: how often can Microlax microenemas be used for newborns? Especially in cases where such a problem occurs constantly.

Most main criterion The thing parents should be guided by is the baby’s well-being. If he is capricious, restless and irritable due to constipation, then you can use this microenema. The dosage is the same for both adults and children, and is 5 ml. However, for newborns, especially for the first time, it is recommended to first administer half the contents of the bottle.

In most cases, even this amount may be sufficient. But the question of how often such procedures can be done can be decided exclusively by a pediatrician. However, you should not use microenemas more than once a day.

Important! Before administering Microlax to a newborn, you must carefully study the instructions. This is very important because for children from birth to 3 years old, the tip is only inserted halfway.

How quickly does Microlax work for newborns?

Most reviews confirm the information given in the instructions for use, which states that the effect should occur within 5-15 minutes. This is what happens to most children. Parents immediately notice an improvement in the baby’s condition.

How long can Microlax be used for newborns?

It is important to remember that this remedy does not remove the cause of constipation, but is exclusively aid. Therefore, if a child has such a problem, it is necessary to look for the root cause, and this remedy will help alleviate the condition for a certain time. Therefore, you should not use a microenema all the time; it can even cause harm. The instructions also indicate that the drug is not intended for long-term use.

What to do if the drug does not help the newborn, what to replace it with: analogues

In the pharmacy you can find various laxatives that are approved for newborns, but there are no structural analogues of Microlask. Quite often, children may be prescribed the following laxatives:

  • Glycerin suppositories. They have a partial effect, because they are only able to lubricate the feces. They last longer than Microlax because additional time is needed for the candle to dissolve. In principle, candles help quite well and have a more reasonable price.

  • Duphalac. It is available in the form of syrup and is approved for long-term use by both adults and children. But the price of this product is more expensive than Microlax and is not very convenient for use by newborns.

  • Normacol. This is also a microenema, but it can be used by older children. This remedy is not suitable for newborns.

IN in this case we can say that Microlax is quite difficult to replace both in effect and in price, since almost all of the medications listed have high prices, but do not have the same effect.

Side effects

If a child is prone to allergies to the components of the drug, various manifestations may occur, such as itching in the anus or skin rash. Therefore, it is very important to study the instructions for use, especially if this drug was recommended to you at the pharmacy.

With prolonged use and incorrect dosage, a “lazy bowel” condition may develop, in which the newborn is unable to go to the toilet without additional stimulation. In essence, addiction occurs. Therefore, you should not immediately run to the pharmacy for medicine if your baby begins to have such a problem. Use alternative methods: massage, special exercises and other similar techniques. And if this doesn’t help, then it’s worth using medications.

Also remember that if any of the side effects occur, you must stop further use of the drug, otherwise you may harm your baby’s health.

Reviews

Excellent tool! When I was in confinement during pregnancy, it helped me a lot. After discharge, I tried not to use microenemas and replaced them with Regulax. It also acts quickly and gently.

These microenemas are very inconvenient to use. I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone - I moved and it all came out (((And you don’t need to move much, since the funds are quite small... In general, I decided that I would take the weak-cap again, after all, this format is much more convenient and effective. And I also need to eat Keep an eye on me, lately I’ve been eating only toast with tea, I don’t have time to cook, maybe that’s why the constipation has returned.

And this enema helped our child a lot, in less than 5 minutes it worked. Whoever writes here that it doesn’t help, maybe you’re doing something wrong, because many of my friends only use Microlax and everything is OK.

After Laparoscopy, Microlax helped a lot.

Instructions

Microlax is sold in plastic bottles with a tip for single use, each containing 5 ml of the drug. The drug contains sodium lauryl sulfoacetate, sodium citrate, sorbitol solution, as well as excipients (sorbic acid, glycerin, water). Sodium citrate displaces water associated with feces, sorbitol ensures the flow of water into the large intestine, and sodium lauryl sulfoacetate helps dilute the intestinal contents.

Under the influence of Microlax, stool softens and bowel movements are stimulated. The drug has a local effect without entering the systemic bloodstream. After administration of the microenema, the effect occurs within five to fifteen minutes. Since the drug directly affects the contents of the colon, the effect occurs faster than from taking laxatives.

"Microlax" is used to treat constipation of various origins and, as well as to prepare the colon for diagnostic studies(, irrigoscopy). The drug is used twenty to thirty minutes before the procedure. Since the product does not affect the upper gastrointestinal tract, it can be used in pregnant, lactating women and newborns.

To treat constipation in newborns, the drug can be used from the first days of life. For infants, the tip is inserted only half the length, the contents of the tube are inserted completely. After a microenema, it is recommended to give the child a tummy massage in a circular motion clockwise. For adults and children over 3 years of age, the tip must be inserted to its full length, and then the contents of the tube must be inserted. If bowel movement does not occur after using the drug, you should consult a doctor.

The question of how often Microlax can be used must be decided by the attending physician. If necessary, do it daily, but it is better to use the drug as rarely as possible. Microlax helps with bowel movements, but does not eliminate the cause of bowel dysfunction; its indiscriminate use can lead to chronic constipation.

Microlax is contraindicated in hypersensitivity to the components. TO side effects drug applies possible appearance of a lung burning in the rectal area, development allergic reactions. No cases of Microlax overdose have been identified. There are no data on interactions with other drugs.
