Our ancestors did not have such a problem as choosing a name for a newborn. Today, in some families, this is reaching the point of scandal, since dad wants to name his son Jordan, mom wants to name him Apollo, and grandparents dream of Vanechka. But in former times, everything was decided by the Orthodox church book, which was called “Saints”. Parents came to church, and the priest offered a choice of several names of Christian saints, whose memory was honored on the baby’s birthday. And if now parents want to make a choice in this particular way - how to choose a name for a child according to the calendar?

How to choose the right name according to the calendar?

Birthday, Angel's Day, name day... Many people confuse these concepts and congratulate them on their birthday. In fact, a birthday is the day on which a person was born, and a name day is the day of remembrance of the saint after whom he was named. The second name for name day is the day of the Angel or the day of the namesake. Previously, these days coincided for almost everyone, but now they practically do not. Despite this, some people began to celebrate Angel Day on the same basis as their birthday.

The Saints contain about 1,700 different names. Most of them are for men, and they have largely fallen out of use. This is not surprising, because many names for modern people seem funny, for example, Popius, Mnasen, Kurduva or Yazdundokta.

If you decide to name your newborn according to the calendar, remember the following:

  1. It is best to choose the name for the baby of the saint who is honored on his birthday. For example, your child was born on February 1st. You are truly lucky, since according to the calendar, the newborn can be called by the following names: Arseny, Gregory, Henry, Louise, Euphrasia, Mark, Makar, Meletius, Savva, Theodosius, Feodor or Januarius.
  2. If you have a boy, and on this day there are no names for a male representative, then modern church usually advises looking a few days ahead. You can do the same if you don’t like the proposed name (or names) at all.
  3. The baptismal name is given once in a lifetime and does not change again (with the exception of the name changing upon tonsure as a monk and when changing faith).
  4. IN Lately Some parents give their children double names: one is secular, and the other is ecclesiastical. Some people do this on purpose, while others do it by accident - it’s just that at birth the baby is given a non-Orthodox name, and in church the parents learn that the child cannot be baptized under the name, for example, Stella or Camilla. In this case, the priest invites parents to choose an Orthodox name for the baby - close or consonant with the “passport name”.
  5. If the saint in whose honor you named your baby is venerated several times a year, then the Angel’s day is the next name day after the day birth.

From antiquity to the present day

The Orthodox book "Saints of Saints" is nothing more than full list all the names of the saints whom he honors Orthodox Church. The second name of this book is “The Book of Months”, since it describes the whole year, day by day, month by month.

Giving a child a name according to the calendar is ancient tradition many peoples. The Slavs were no exception to this. People believed that when a baby receives the name of a saint who is revered on the day of his birth or baptism, he will have a happy and long life. At the same time, it was not advisable to name a child after the great martyr - then he would be destined for a hard life, full of hardships and suffering.

If several saints were commemorated on a child’s birthday, then the parents could choose a name from several suggested by the priest. If there was only one name, then, alas, the parents had no choice. People did not dare to contradict the church. Later, if no saint was commemorated on the new person’s birthday, or they really didn’t like the name, then parents began to “increase” the list of names: they could consider the names of saints whose memory is celebrated on the eighth or fortieth day after the birth of the child. The fact is that our ancestors believed that a newborn should be given a name no earlier than the eighth day, and the sacrament of Baptism had to be carried out precisely on the fortieth day.

“Mesyatseslov” was used until the 1917 revolution. With the advent of Soviet power, when churches began to be massively destroyed and religion began to be banned, the tradition of naming children according to the calendar was abandoned. Nowadays, parents have become much more likely to turn to Orthodox calendar to choose a name for the child. Many believe that it will make the baby happy, and the saint after whom it was named will become an intercessor and guardian angel for the child. And some parents simply follow modern fashion, because today an old or unusual name is “the last word.” So in kindergartens and schools we meet children with the names Luka and Akulina, Spiridon and Evdokia, Hilarion and Pelagia.

Name days today are perhaps the most important holiday in the life of every churchgoer. According to the rules, if your parents did everything according to the canons of the church, this holiday coincides with your real birthday. The fact is that the name that a person bears usually belongs to a saint, who is considered his heavenly patron.

The Church honors the saint on various occasions - birth, death, significant events in his earthly life. Accordingly, each saint can have more than one day of remembrance. All of them are included in a special calendar called the Saints, and in Rus' children were always named after these same Saints.

The name depended on the date of birth and was tied to it. After the country departed from God in Soviet period, the diminishing role of the church in the civil registration process, the tradition has practically died out.

Today, name days are being revived again with the restoration of the influence of the church (not so much political as moral), and parents are increasingly trying to connect them with the real date of birth and give the child a suitable name.

The rules are much softer than before, but it is not recommended to name children after saints whose memorial day has not yet arrived this year.

In addition, a great number of saints were glorified at the end of the twentieth century as new martyrs and confessors - almost any traditional name (especially Alexander and Vladimir) can now be found in the Saints for any day.

Whose name day is March 23?

In the ancient calendar it is noted that on March 23, name days can be celebrated for those who received such feminine and male names, like Vasilisa, Galina, Victor, Georgy, Denis, Mikhail, Pavel and some others.

According to the church calendar for 2019 we find, that the birthday people on this day are also those who were named in honor of the Hieromartyr Dmitry(Legeido), canonized only at the beginning of the current century.

How to celebrate?

The pious tradition, which corresponded to the spirit and meaning of the holiday in the old days, is being revived now. Considering that today’s name day is the day of remembrance of the saint whose name you bear, it is necessary to address him with prayerful praise. You can go to church, light candles and mentally communicate with the Lord and His saint, who patronizes you at every stage of your life’s journey.

Orthodox Christians, receiving communion for the first time after receiving holy Baptism, subsequently have the tradition of partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ on the day of the angel, whether it is today or on any other day, with special awe and reverence. This, however, does not mean that you should only take communion on your birthday - you need to resort to this life-saving remedy as often as possible.

It is necessary to sincerely and sincerely ask for help, but not limit yourself to prayer. Faith is good, but it alone, without good deeds, will be insignificant. Do you believe in the Lord and claim that you live according to God’s laws, but at the same time you won’t help your old neighbor carry a heavy package to her apartment? This is not faith, this is pretense, both before yourself and before God.

If your angel day is today, you (as on any other day, however), need to do good deeds, give alms, do good deeds and treat those near and far with love and kindness.

A feast is also not forbidden - in accordance with church nutrition rules (days on which consumption is prescribed lean food, multi-day fasts and so on). Everything is allowed, but not everything is useful - a bright holiday (which is also popularly called the day of the angel) should not be turned into an unbridled party. You can drink (in moderation), dance and have fun (within the limits of what is permitted).

In any case, you should not celebrate name days on fasting days (if it is a one-day fast - Wednesday or Friday - move the celebration to the weekend; during long fasts it is also better to keep your mind strict, but you can rejoice and have fun after the holiday).

Everyone loves gifts

What to give to the birthday boy? This question arises in every person sooner or later. How can you please your loved one? First, you need to consider gifts with holiday symbols. It could be personalized icon, book - life of a saint, jewelry (pendant, medallion) with the image of the heavenly patron. Buy these products in Orthodox church shops and stores, where the products will be blessed.

Take into account the inclinations, tastes and preferences of the birthday person, otherwise you may upset the person instead of giving him joy. Do not give religious gifts to people who are militant towards religion - do not allow quarrels and do not once again provoke a loved one.

It is necessary to take into account both your financial capabilities and the inclinations and preferences of the birthday person - you do not need to shoulder the unaffordable sums allocated for a gift, but you also do not need to “give away”.

Read forums and websites on relevant topics, rack your brains a little, ask mutual friends, and finally, use your imagination - if you want to bring joy to your loved one, you don’t have to spend huge sums of money.

Don't forget to add a postcard - you can use both funny cards (take into account the birthday boy's sense of humor, don't offend him, even if accidentally), and serious cards with beautiful drawings, homemade cards. Don’t give cards with typewritten texts - write at least a couple of sincere and kind words personally from myself.

How and who should name a child? There is no consensus on this issue. Let's talk about Orthodox tradition naming.

For a believer, the question of name has always been great value. It was believed that through a name, not only character traits, but also destiny are transmitted to a person. The names of such heroes of faith as Isaac, Jacob and Abraham were very common in early Christianity. By giving the baby such a name, the parents wanted to make him involved in the holiness and glory that his original owner had.

In Rus', along with the adoption of Orthodoxy, a tradition arose of giving names in honor of saints. What is the meaning of tradition? From the point of view of Christianity, a person who bears the name of a saint has a close connection with him. A saint who has proven his faith and devotion to God throughout his life or martyrdom, now from heaven helps a person in his difficult life path, drives away demons, in general, patronizes him.

With the name of the saint, a part of holiness and strength seemed to be transferred to the baby. Saint's name ( church name) for the child was chosen by the parents from the calendar and given by the clergyman at baptism.

The Saints (or church calendar) is a list of saints, distributed by month and date (see below). Each date in such a calendar is a church holiday - the day of remembrance of the corresponding saint (which mainly falls on the day of the saint's death). During the centuries-old history of its existence, the calendar was constantly replenished with new names. Now the Church celebrates the memory of some saint almost every day.

Today, as before, Christian families do not name children by random names - the child is given a name mainly in honor of canonized saints. Usually the name is chosen according to the calendar or in honor of a specific saint revered in a given family, emphasizing one’s special attitude towards him. On the day of remembrance of his saint, a person celebrates his name day (See. name day calendar).

The modern church calendar contains more than 1,100 completely different names. A significant part of the names in the calendar are of Slavic, Greek and Hebrew origin; there are names that arose due to the Latin language group. Among them there are many that not only have not lost their vitality, but are also becoming more and more popular. It is safe to say that the church calendar is an inexhaustible source of names with enormous internal energy.

In modern families, there are a lot of contradictions about the correct name of the baby. For our ancestors, how to choose a name for the unborn child was not a question, because the answer was in the month word “Saints”.

How to choose a name for a child according to the Saints

“Saints” is a collection that contains more than 1,700 names of what to name a child, mostly male. In addition, such names are not used now because they seem unattractive. For example, Popius and Kurduva. But which parent wants to name their child “Popius”, his peers will laugh at him in the future. Therefore, the choice comes from modern traditions.

The best choice according to the birthday of a particular saint. For example, Lyudmila is the date of veneration of the Great Martyr Saint Lyudmila of the Czech Princess on September 29. She was strangled by relatives who adhered to the pagan religion. If a girl was born on September 29, then it is appropriate to name her Lyudmila.

If on the date of birth of a boy or girl there are no days of veneration of the Saints, then you can look at the following days.

The custom of giving the names of Saints among Orthodox people has existed for a long time. You should not name a child after the great martyr; he will have a difficult life ahead of him. The concept of “great martyr” is associated with the persecution of Christians during the reign of Nero. Not all people could withstand constant torture and bullying and abandoned their faith. Those who carried their cross to the end were subsequently counted as great martyrs. It is not recommended to name children this way, because you can give the baby a life full of hardships and torment.

An important date is considered to be the name day of the angel. Many people confuse a guardian angel with a saint. These are different concepts. The angel is given during the rite of christening by the Lord. The saint will patronize the baptized child, pray before God for him and protect him. Saints are real individuals who led a righteous and godly lifestyle, which earned them the rank of mediator between people and the Lord.

How to choose a name for a child according to the church calendar

Many people consider name day and birth date to be one date. Angel's Day is the date to honor the saint. Birth is the day on which a person was born. But some people celebrate both angel day and birthday on the same date. Previously, they corresponded, but now they do not adhere to the rules of giving children the names of a saint, so the numbers are different.

It is correct to name the baby according to the month word not on the date of birth, but on the 8th or 40th day of birth. They were baptized in the church earlier on the 8th day. If on this date there is no a suitable name, then you should listen to your intuition. Sometimes it happens that a mother dreams of what to name her baby.

The monthly word includes Greek, Latin and Slavic words. In ancient times, babies were given names during the rite of christening or when being tonsured as monks. Currently, names have a more comfortable form of pronunciation. For example, Yuri is a Slavic version of the Greek George, and Svetlana is Photinia.

How to choose a name for a child by date of birth:

  • You can use a special collection of monthly words, where words are arranged by month and date. The birth number is not random. It was on this date that the Lord sent man to earth with a special mission and purpose, endowing him with special qualities.
  • You should purchase such a calendar in advance and choose a word that is appropriate and consonant with the patronymic.

How to choose a name for a child’s baptism if it is not in the month’s calendar? Then the priest offers to give the child both a secular and a church name. In any case, this is a personal matter for each family.

Naming a child correctly is a symbolic destiny, and means much more than a sound. It stores the highest unearthly energy. It is believed that a child who has received the patronage of a saint receives the protection of a guardian angel. Names accompany people throughout their lives, and after death they are remembered and honored with them.

The Lord is always with you!
