On this day, the Russian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of remembrance of Saints Peter and Fevronia, who since ancient times were considered the patrons of family and marriage in Russia.

The initiative to establish a new public holiday - the All-Russian Day of Marital Love and Family Happiness in honor of the faithful Prince Peter and Princess Fevronia was unanimously approved in the Federation Council at a meeting of the Federation Council Committee on Social Policy on March 26, 2008.

The love story of a holy married couple is described in the Old Russian "Tale of Peter and Fevronia of Murom".

According to the lives of the saints, the noble prince Peter was the second son of the Murom prince Yuri Vladimirovich. He ascended the Murom throne in 1203. Several years before the reign, Peter fell ill with leprosy, from which no one could cure him. In a dream, it was revealed to the prince that he could be healed by the beekeeper's daughter Fevronia, a peasant woman from the village of Laskovoy in Ryazan land. Fevronia was beautiful, pious and kind, besides, she was a wise girl, knew the properties of herbs and knew how to heal ailments. The prince fell in love with Fevronia for her piety, wisdom and kindness and made a vow to marry her after healing. The girl healed the prince, but he did not keep his word.

The disease resumed, Fevronia again cured the prince, and he married a healer.

When Peter inherited the reign after his brother, the boyars did not want to have a princess of a simple rank and demanded that the prince leave her. Peter, having learned that they wanted to separate him from his beloved wife, chose to voluntarily give up power and wealth and retire with her into exile. Peter and Fevronia left Murom by sailing on a boat along the Oka River. Soon confusion began in Murom, the boyars quarreled, coveting the vacated princely throne, blood was shed. Then the boyars who came to their senses gathered a council and decided to call Prince Peter back. The prince and princess returned, and Fevronia managed to earn the love of the townspeople.

In their old age, Peter and Fevronia took tonsure in different monasteries with the names David and Euphrosinia, and prayed to God that they die on one day, and bequeathed to bury themselves together in a specially prepared coffin with a thin partition in the middle.

They each died in their own cell on the same day and hour - July 8 (according to the old style - June 25), 1228.

Considering burial in one coffin incompatible with the monastic rank, their bodies were laid in different monasteries, but the next day they were together. So they buried the holy spouses together in the city of Murom in the cathedral church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos.

Approximately 300 years after their death, Peter and Fevronia were canonized by the Russian Orthodox Church. Today the relics of Saints Peter and Fevronia rest in the Holy Trinity Convent in Murom.

Since then, the Orthodox world has honored family patrons on July 8.

The tradition of secular celebration of the Day of Peter and Fevronia was restored by the residents of Murom in the 1990s, when they decided to combine the City Day with the Day of Family Values.

The Day of Family, Love and Fidelity became a holiday of the all-Russian scale in 2008.

The holiday was approved by the Interreligious Council of Russia.

The organizing committee of the holiday is headed by the President of the Foundation for Social and Cultural Initiatives, the wife of the Prime Minister of the Russian Federation, Svetlana Medvedeva.

Chamomile was chosen as the symbol of Family Day - a wild flower, the most widespread at this time of the year in Russia, symbolizing dreams of love and fidelity.

Every year, on the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity, the best families of Russia are awarded a public award - the medal "For Love and Loyalty". On one side of the medal there is a symbol of the holiday - chamomile, on the reverse - the faces of Saints Peter and Fevronia. The slogan of the medal: for love and loyalty to the family. Together with the medal, valuable gifts are also awarded, which correspond to the "family theme" and are determined by the local authorities and organizers.

As part of the celebration of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity annually

Day of Peter and Fevronia in 2016

The Day of Remembrance of Saints Peter and Fevronia of Murom is celebrated by the Orthodox Church twice a year - on the Sunday preceding September 19, in honor of the transfer of the relics and on July 8, the day of their righteous death.

Providing us an example of an ideal married life, Christian love and devotion, Saints Peter and Fevronia are considered the patrons of the Orthodox family and marriage. The day of their memory coincides with the national holiday - the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity.

The Lord brought this couple together in an amazing way. The brother of the Murom prince Peter, having fallen ill with a serious illness, went in search of a doctor in the Ryazan lands. There he met Fevronia. The girl agreed to heal the prince on the condition that he becomes her husband. After his recovery, Peter kept his promise and took Fevronia as his wife.

During their earthly life, the holy couple showed incredible devotion to each other. They are used to sharing all the joys and hardships in half. Even when the Murom boyars rebelled against the princess from the peasant class and demanded that the prince renounce the throne, Peter did not leave Fevronia and left the city with her. Soon after their departure, strife and unrest began, the people themselves asked the prince to return and take the place of the legitimate ruler.

Before their death, according to pious custom, the couple took monastic vows with the names David and Euphrosinia. Saints Peter and Fevronia died on the same day. They bequeathed to put them in one coffin, which they had prepared for themselves long ago. To this day, the relics of the Murom miracle workers rest in a common cancer.

The tale of Peter and Fevronia

"The Tale of Peter and Fevronia" is a monument of ancient Russian literature, which tells about the life of the holy noble princes Peter and Fevronia of Murom. The author of the story is the famous writer of the mid-16th century, priest Ermolai (in monasticism Erasmus).

After the canonization of Peter and Fevronia at the Moscow church cathedral in 1547, Ermolai was commissioned to write the life of the new Murom miracle workers. As a source, the author relied on oral folk legends, which strengthened the narrative element in the Tale and made it completely different from the works of hagiographic literature of that time.
The plot of the story has become one of the most popular in Russia. The text of the work was distributed in a huge number of copies. More than 300 of them have survived to this day.

Contents of the "Tale of Peter and Fevronia"

In the city of Murom, Prince Pavel ruled, and he had a brother, Peter. The devil began to appear to Paul's wife in the guise of a serpent in order to seduce her into fornication. Outsiders saw the snake in the image of Paul, and only the princess knew who he really was. Unable to endure it, she told her husband everything. Prince Paul asked his wife to try out the snake, from which he would die. The answer was: "My death was from Petrov's shoulder, from Agricov's sword."

Wanting to help his brother, Peter began to look for Agricov's sword. Once, during a prayer in the Church of the Exaltation of the Honorable and Life-giving Cross of the Lord, a youth appeared to him and pointed to a crack in the altar wall. It contained the cherished weapon.

On the same evening, Peter, having talked with his brother, went to the princess's chambers. Imagine his surprise when he found Prince Paul with her. Quickly realizing that this was the wicked serpent, Peter began to fight with him. The snake died, but the blood from his wound sprayed the prince from head to toe, his whole body was covered with painful sores and scabs.

No one could heal Peter. In search of a doctor, he ordered to take himself to the Ryazan land, where he met the daughter of a tree-darting bee keeper (extracting wild honey) - Fevronia. She was a very wise girl, she did the gift of clairvoyance and healing. Fevronia agreed to heal Peter only if he became her husband. Peter promised to marry her, but in his heart he was embarrassed that this girl was a commoner, and decided not to keep his promise. Soon the disease resumed and the prince again came to Fevronia. She healed Peter, and he took her as his wife.

After the death of his brother Pavel, Peter began to rule in Murom. But the haughty boyars did not want to accept his wife, who was not of princely origin, and demanded the spouses leave the city. Peter and Fevronia accepted their exile with humility and sailed in two boats along the Oka.
Soon after, a bloody struggle for the princely throne began in Murom. This sowed discord and confusion in the city. Then the boyars, no longer embarrassed by the peasant origin of Fevronia, were forced to ask the prince and his wife to return and continue their rule.

Having reached their advanced years, according to the pious custom, Peter and Fevronia accepted monasticism with the names David and Euphrosinia. Separated by monastic walls, they asked God for a one-time death. The spouses bequeathed to put them in one coffin, which they had prepared for themselves long ago.

The Lord sent them what they asked of him in prayers - the faithful princes died on the same day, at the same hour.

Considering it indecent to bury a monk and a nun in the same coffin, the spouses were buried separately from each other. However, the next day, their bodies were miraculously close by. Then it became clear that there was a special God's blessing for this, and no one dared to separate them again.

The Holy Trinity Monastery was built in the middle of the 17th century with the money of a wealthy merchant. On the site of the wooden church of the Holy Trinity, built in the XIV century, the Trinity Cathedral was erected. Next to it, the Kazan Gate Church and the bell tower were built on the same foundation. The monastery ensemble was finally formed in the 19th century, when the cell buildings, a stone fence and the building of a parish school were completed.

With the advent of conscientious power, the monastery was closed, but was not destroyed - it was considered an architectural monument and was protected by the state. Liturgical and monastic life was resumed here in 1991.

On July 8, starting in 2008, the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity is widely celebrated in all cities of Russia. Many consider it a worthy alternative to Valentine's Day, which came from abroad. Indeed, in the national holiday there is more spiritual love and admiration for loyalty and devotion. And all because the holiday is closely associated with Saints Peter and Fevronia - a couple who are an example of ideal family relationships.

The story of a difficult life and great love of Peter and Fevronia

Prince Peter, who was the son of the Murom prince Yuri, was struck by a terrible leprosy. All attempts to cure the unfortunate man from the disease ended in failure, no one could return Peter to health. Almost resigned to his fate, the man saw an unusual dream in which it was revealed to him that there was a girl in the world who could heal the affected body. In the prophetic dream, the name of the savior was revealed to Peter - Fevronia.

Fevronia was a peasant from a Ryazan village, the daughter of an ordinary beekeeper. Since childhood, the girl studied herbs and had the gift of healing, even wild animals obeyed her and did not dare to show aggression. The amazingly kind and beautiful young lady immediately liked the young prince, and he gave his word that he would marry the beauty immediately after his recovery. Fevronia put the man on his feet, but he did not keep his promise and did not lead the village girl down the aisle. Most likely, this was the reason that leprosy fell on the prince's head with greater force.

The messengers went for the healer for the second time, and Fevronia did not refuse to treat the deceiver and again gave him health. After that, Peter married the savior and until the end of his days did not regret what he had done. According to legend, the spouses lived in love, harmony and respect, never deceived each other and always spoke flatteringly about their halves.

After the death of his older brother, Peter was destined to take the city power into his own hands. The boyars reacted with approval to the respected ruler, but a simple peasant woman haunted them - no one wanted to see a representative of the lower class in power. The boyar's wives constantly slandered Fevronia, persuading their husbands to destroy the clever and beautiful woman they disliked. One day the prince was given an ultimatum - either to drive his beloved wife out of the house, or to leave the post of ruler. Peter did not hesitate for a long time, but chose to abdicate from power and decided to leave Murom altogether.

In exile, the young wise princess supported her grieving husband in every possible way. When the house was in difficulty with food and money, she always found a wonderful way out. Peter still idolized his betrothed and never once reproached his beloved that for her sake he had to leave his high post and live in hardships.

However, the deprivations of the princely couple did not last long, soon the Murom boyars realized that without a competent ruler it would be difficult to maintain order in the city. Thinking it over, they sent messengers for the prince and asked him to return with his wife to his hometown and again take the post of mayor. Peter consulted with Fevronia and the couple, not opposing, returned home.

In love and harmony, the devoted spouses Peter and Fevronia lived to old age, and when they lived to gray hair, they accepted monasticism under the names Euphrosinia and David. As monks, loving spouses, tenderly loving each other, prayed to God for death in one day. Dreaming of being together in heaven, they prepared for themselves one coffin for two, where the two bodies were to be separated only by a thin partition.

Tradition says that the elderly monks really departed to another world on one day - this happened on June 25, 1228 according to the stroma style, which corresponds to July 8 according to the current calendar. Living, as befits monks, in different cells, they died in one hour.

The monks were afraid of the wrath of the Lord and did not put the dead in one coffin - never such burials were there in Christianity. The bodies of the deceased were in different temples, but somehow miraculously they ended up nearby. After such a miracle happened for the second time, the monks decided to bury the loving spouses together near the cathedral church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Only 300 years after his death, Prince Peter of Murom and his wife Fevronia were canonized. The Orthodox Church declared them the patrons of the family, and the relics of the saints found peace in the Holy Trinity Convent in the city of Murom. July 8 is considered the Day of Peter and Fevronia in the Orthodox calendar.

Day of family, love and fidelity and its traditions

In the nineties, the inhabitants of Murom, where they have always venerated the holy spouses, decided to combine the City Day with an Orthodox holiday. So by chance a new Russian holiday was born, glorifying love and devotion.

In 2008, the celebration of the Day of Family, Love and Fidelity was officially approved and soon approved by the Interreligious Council of Russia. Chamomile, a flower that is especially popular with all lovers, has become the symbol of the holiday of pure and selfless love. Later, the Family Day got its own medal, on one side of which a chamomile is depicted, and on the other - the faces of Peter and Fevronia. The medal is traditionally awarded to married couples in which love and understanding reign.

Now the Orthodox holiday is celebrated in forty countries of the world, but the main celebrations are held in the city of Murom, Vladimir region.
