Baccarat - the history of the brand. Biography Group "BACCARA" (Baccarat)

In 1977, on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura, Mayte Matee and Maria Mendiolo performed flamenco and sang traditional Spanish songs in a cabaret for numerous tourists who had fled away from the commercialism of Spain and its environs to the deserted beautiful beaches. The girls' enormous potential was noticed by the head of the RCA record company, Leon Dean, who quickly signed a contract with them and named the duo BACCARA. Soon they began working with Rolf Soja, who also co-wrote the song “Yes sir I can boogie,” with which the duo is still associated. The song immediately became a number one hit in the British charts and was a huge success selling all over the world. Mayte and Maria continued with the equally successful song "Sorry I"m a lady" and released their first album, calling it simply " Baccara". International recognition grew and was supported by new albums and such famous singles as "Darling", "Ay ay sailor", "The devil sent you to Loredo". In 1978, they represented Luxembourg at the Eurovision Song Contest. However, despite Because the public, as fickle as their tastes, snapped up their recordings, their success was short-lived.While the group received large fan support in Germany, the Scandinavian countries, Japan and Britain were almost completely ignored BACCARA. Unfortunately, after the release of their third album for RCA, "Colors", they disappeared.
In 1981, a follow-up album called "Bad boys" was released, which did not sell at all in Britain; then the members began working on their solo projects. In 1983, the duo BACCARA disbanded, and Maria and Mayte released their solo albums, although they were successful only in those countries where the group's popularity remained BACCARA. Both received relative success. The girls created their own groups. Maria named her duet NEW BACCARA, to be different from the group featuring Mayte. She joined forces with the lovely Marisa, with whom the duet still exists. The manager of Maria and Marisa is the same Leon Deane. The group was based mainly in Germany, where they still have many loyal fans and where most of their discs are recorded. Recently they released a fake CD in German "Die Highlights", the label of which shows the original composition of the duo Mayte and Maria. In fact, the disc contained all the tracks from the NEW album BACCARA"Fun", as well as 12 versions of the songs "Fantasy Boy" and "Touch Me" and their other successful single "Call Me Up". While Maria and her bandmate were intensively recording new tracks, Mayte continued to work regularly. Watching videos of Mayte from the mid-80s, you can see that she had several different partners during her transformation into a specific BACCARA. She is now working closely with her new partner Jane Comerford, an Australian musician who has been living and working in Hamburg for some time. And although they did not record huge hits, as the NEW duet did BACCARA, they are often invited to participate in various television shows and live performances, based on the list of hits of the girls from the original lineup BACCARA, as well as up-tempo versions of traditional Spanish songs such as "Aranjuez" and "Granada".
BACCARA recorded a HI-NRG version of Bette Midler's hit "Wind Beneath My Wings", which was a huge success in gay clubs. In fact, these 12 singles are quite difficult to find, the limits of their commercial success and success BACCARA continued to expand globally.
What about the future? Without a doubt, BACCARA still has loyal fans. The disc "Highlights" quickly won many positive reviews. The duo's new single BACCARA"Wind Beneath My Wings" was originally released in 1993. The beautiful single contains new versions of four directions with an updated sound from the late 90s, including a progressive direction. The band's full album was also released, entitled " BACCARA 2000", which features 13 tracks in both classic and new versions.

In 1764, King Louis XV of France empowered the Bishop of Metz, Monsieur Montmorency-Laval, to open a factory in the village of Baccarat in Eastern France for the production of glass glasses, mirrors and other glass objects.

On November 15, 1816, while the factory was recruiting local workers, the first Baccarat crystal furnace was put into operation.

In 1823, the plant received its first large order - a service for the King of France, Louis XVIII. Following him, representatives of the richest and most famous families in France become Baccarat’s customers. Both during the reign of the monarchy and after its fall, the plant is not left without government orders. The Juvisy service from Baccarat still adorns the tables of the Elysee Palace.

On November 3, 1830, Baccarat sent its products to Constantinople for the first time. In subsequent years, the plant supplied countless quantities of chandeliers, candelabra, staircase lamps, sets and even hookahs to the palaces of the Turkish capital.

In 1832, the crystal factories of Baccarat, Saint-Louis and Choisy-Le-Roy merged under the name of the trading community Launay, Hautin & Cie, whose head office is located in Paris. At the same time, the company publishes illustrated catalogs to promote its products.

In 1841, the Harcourt service appeared, a canonical product of the architectural style. At the world exhibitions held in Paris in 1855, 1867 and 1878, the Baccarat brand was recognized and received gold medals three times.

In 1857, the company Launay, Hautin & Cie was disbanded and now only Baccarat was located at the Paris address. In 1860, the brand registered its signature in the Commercial Court of Paris. From now on until 1936, the brand used it on the labels of all items. In 1878, the brand invents a special type of engraving - a new technique that allows it to improve its models.

In 1885, Baccarat supplied its products, including home decoration and crystal chandeliers, to India and opened branches in all corners of the world: in Asia, Central America, South America and the USA.

In 1896, Baccarat received an order from Nicholas II. The plant has to operate its furnace 24 hours a day, for which it was nicknamed the “Russian furnace”: it was important to have time to fulfill the order for the Russian Tsar.

The following year, Baccarat began producing perfume bottles and already in 1907 produced 4,000 of them - a record figure compared to 1897 (150 bottles).

The Baccarat label, which is still in demand today, produces bottles for the largest brands: Coty, Houbigant, Patou, Schiaparelli, Elizabeth Arden, Guerlain, Dior, Montana, Versace and Lancome.

In 1909, the factory created a service for the Emperor of Japan himself, decorated with an engraved chrysanthemum - the symbol of the imperial house.

In 1925, the company participated in the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts in Paris. Georges Chevalier, designer of Baccarat since 1916, conceives a joint project between Baccarat and Christofle. The result is a three-metre long chandelier symbolizing a waterfall and designed for the Royal Theater in Sydney. Five years later, the Prince of Wales orders a service with square bottoms for English yachts.

Since 1936, Baccarat has put its signature (by grinding or engraving) on all branded products. In the same year, a service was created for US President Franklin Roosevelt.

In 1948, the American branch of Baccarat Inc. opened. and in New York and two stores: one for sale in large quantities, the other for retail.

In 1964, a retrospective exhibition was organized at the Paris Museum of Decorative Arts to mark the bicentenary of Baccarat.

1972 marked the beginning of the brand’s collaboration with artists and designers from France and other countries. The very first of them, Italian designer Roberto Sambone, developed a crystal collection in 1927. Salvador Dali and Cesar also worked for Baccarat.

In 1993, Baccarat began producing jewelry. In 1994, the crystal holding celebrated its 230th birthday and, to mark this event, produced a chandelier with 230 bulbs.

In 1995, Baccarat released the Constellation collection. This collection, and especially its Vega line, are revolutionary for the world of glass.

In 1997, Baccarat released Une Nuit Etoilee au Bengale ("Starry Night in Bengal"), the first perfume in the trilogy Les Contes d'Ailleurs ("Tales from Afar"). In the same year, a retrospective exhibition entitled Baccarat: Una was held in the Spanish city of Segovia Historia del Cristal France This event precedes the major Baccarat exhibition in Japan, which runs from 1998 to 1999 in four museums in Yokohama, Osaka, Hiroshima and Tokyo.

In 2000, Baccarat invited American designer Barbara Barry to collaborate with her to develop a new collection. This is how Tranquility was created, a collection imbued with sensuality and innocence.

In 2002, Baccarat launched two new lines: a series of accessories and its first watches.

In 2005, Baccarat engaged Philippe Starck (who designed the company's new office) to create a limited collection for the brand. To do this, he returns to the origins of glassmaking, reviving long-forgotten black crystal and creating the Darkside collection from it.

Today, the brand has more than 46 boutiques and is represented in more than two hundred multi-brand stores.

In 2007, Baccarat's turnover amounted to 138 million euros, and the company decided to create a chain of five-star hotels, Baccarat Hotels & Resorts.

In the seventies, the now well-known vocal duo Baccara arose. It consisted of Mayte Matee and Maria Mendiola. By the early eighties, the duo broke up. Maite Mati retained the name Baccara.

Maria Mendiola has found a new partner - half-Spanish, half-French Marisa Perez. Marisa studied at the same dance school where Maria and Maite were found in 1977, in the same class with them - and was also auditioned and watched by the producers.

Since the name Baccara was already taken, Maria and Marisa had to take another stage name - New Baccara. Which of the two groups is more Baccara?

Maite Mati has changed many partners over the past twenty years. Maria and Marisa were always together. I think the best argument in this eternal dispute is the fact that in 1990 the State Concert made a two-month tour of the Soviet Union specifically for Maria and Marisa.

New Baccara released at least three singles produced by Louis Rodriguez.

Mayte Matee recorded a solo album, Spanish Dreams, in 1989.

New Baccara released an album in 1990 called FUN. All songs except Yes Sir, I Can Boogie were written by Martin Colgan.

In 1991, a pirated Singaporean disc called The Best Of New Baccara was released, which included the early (1985-89) vinyl singles of the New Baccara duo, as well as singles and a good part of the debut album You Really Got Me of the singer working under the pseudonym Gina T.

Gina T has nothing to do with New Baccara! It was assumed that this was one of Maite’s former partners at Baccara.

On the Singapore disc it was announced that the New Baccara duo would henceforth be called Gina & Matee. This combination (Gina & Matee) has never been used anywhere else.

A few words about Gina T. In August 1989, Gina T’s single In My Fantasy appeared. It was quite a success. In 1990, Gina's next single Tokyo By Night attracted the attention of disco fans. In 1991, Gina Tee's first solo album appeared, entitled You Really Got Me, including recordings from 1989-91.

In 1992, the second album The Window Of My Heart was released. Compared to the first album, it was not a great success. This is explained by the lack of bright compositions and some monotony.

In the late nineties, Gina T. released a couple of singles. What she is doing now is unknown.

Mayte Mateos (born in 1951) and Maria Mendiola (born in 1952) met on a tour of the Spanish television ballet. As it turned out, the girls had a lot in common. During this meeting, Maite had the idea of trying herself and Maria as a musical group and performing on stage. This idea was successfully implemented, and the duo began performing in a nightclub, entertaining the audience. Soon, disagreements arose between the group members and the owner of this club, which resulted in the dismissal of both soloists.

However, Maria and Maite decided to try again, already at the Tres Islas hotel on the island of Fuerteventura. The owner liked their numbers, and he left the girls to work. At that time, the duo did not have their own author, and they covered already existing hits by such popular artists as ABBA, Boney M. and Donna Summer. In 1976, they even performed on Spanish television under the name "Duet Venus".

Soon a meeting took place with the Dutch producer Rolf Soya, an employee of the RCA recording studio, who selected songwriter Frank Dostal for the girls. First single released Yes Sir, I Can Boogie. This composition turns out to be very successful, as shown by the ratings in the charts. In Germany, the song holds first place for 8 weeks, in Switzerland - 7, and in Sweden - as much as 20 weeks.

Following this single, the band's first full-length album, entitled Baccara. This album is certified platinum twice. In 1978, the duo, representing Luxembourg, took seventh place at Eurovision with the song Parlez-Vous Français?.

In 1979 the composition The Devil Sent You To Laredo one of the ten most listened to songs in Germany. The duet does not leave television screens. Girls are invited to all sorts of shows, interviewed, and their songs are popular in discos. In the late 1970s, the duo, along with ABBA and Boney M, gained phenomenal popularity in the USSR.

Another single was recorded in 1980 Sleepy Time Boy/Candido. According to Maria Mendiola, the quality of the recording did not stand up to criticism: her voice was practically inaudible on the recording. She scandalously demanded that the single be withdrawn from sale and even sued the record company. Tellingly, the single really flopped.

Rolf Soya and Frank Dostal refused to continue working with Maria Mendiola, so it was decided to record the next Bad Boys album with other producers (Bruce Baxter and Graham Sacher). This fourth album of the duo was a complete failure. There were no funds for further promotion, and no desire to work together. The soloists separated and began to build solo careers.

Despite the fact that Maite and Maria never performed together again, they maintained friendly relations. For example, when Maite Matheus got married in Stockholm in 1982, Maria Mendiola was among the guests. Moreover, at the wedding of her former partner, Maria met her future husband, with whom she later gave birth to two children.

    Maite Mateos

After the group's breakup, Maite continued to collaborate with Rolf Soya and recorded three solo singles at RCA studios: "Souvenirs From Paradise" (1981), "Recuerdos Del Ayer" (1981) and "Malaguena" (1982), but they were not very successful. . In 1983, Maite decided to return to the “Baccara” project, since fans of the duet wanted to see exactly two girls on stage. In total, in the 80s, Maite changed more than 20 partners, including Ángela Muro, Sole García, Jane Comerford, Marissa Perez, Carmen, Cristina Sevilla, Paloma Blanco, Isabel Patton, Romy Abradelo, Rose, Francesca Rodrigues and María Marín . However, Maite could not regain her former popularity. In the late 1980s, she returned to her solo career and recorded the singles "Roses And Wine" (1987) and "I Do, I Do" (1988), as well as the fairly successful album "Spanish Dreams" (1988) on the Polydor label in Sweden. .

    Maria Mendiola

Maria Mendiola recorded several singles and the album “Born Again” on the EMI Electrola label in 1981-82, but they went unnoticed by the public, and for some time Maria taught aerobics. In the mid-1980s, the BMG studio tried in every possible way to “resurrect” departed stars. Maria received an offer to start a project New Baccara. Her partner was Marissa Perez, who was previously one of Maite Mateos' partners. Louis Rodriguez, one of the best. from the Bellaphone label. On the cover of this compilation there was the inscription “New Baccara featuring Gina & Matee” (New Baccara featuring Gina & Matee). Apparently, the Singapore pirates wanted to combine the best singles "Baccara" and "New Baccara" into one disc, and at that time in Singapore many people mistakenly thought that Gina T. was one of Mayte Matee's partners. As a result of this misunderstanding, some people still believe that the compositions “Call me up”, “Touch me”, “Fantasy boy” and “Talismann” were performed by Gina T, and some of the songs by Gina herself (for example, Tokyo by night And In my fantasy) is credited to the group "New Baccara".

    Baccara 2000

In the late 1990s, Maite Mateos and her new partner Christina Sevilla created the group Baccara 2000 and released an album of the same name. In 2004, they took part in the Swedish competition "Melodifestivalen -2004" with the song "Soy tu Venus por esta noche" and released another album. In 2008, Maite and her next partner Paloma Blanco recorded another album “ Satin...In Black & White", produced by Ralph Soya and Frank Dostal, who produced the original Baccara duo's recordings in the '70s, but the album's sales were disappointing. In 2010, Maite's marriage broke up and she moved from Stockholm to Madrid, where she now works as a dance teacher.

    New Baccara today

In 2008, Marissa Perez was diagnosed with acute polyarthritis, as a result of which she was no longer able to take part in New Baccara's live performances. At concerts she was replaced for some time by Laura Mendiola, Maria's niece. In 2009, it was decided to change the name "New Baccara" to simply "Baccara". Today, the group under the name “Baccara” continues to tour and record new songs as part of Maria Mendiola and Cristina Sevilla, who left “Baccara 2000”. With this composition, the group regularly visits Russia and the CIS countries and has repeatedly performed at the “Disco 80s Avtoradio” and “Legends Retro FM” festivals. The group's repertoire includes all the hits of the original band and songs from the NEW BACCARA project, recorded in collaboration with Louis Rodriguez. Since 2010, Maria Mendiola has lived in Hamburg.

    Baccarat group biography:

“Baccara” (Baccara) year of creation 1977, Spain. (Baccara is a rose variety) The musical duet Baccara was created by two young girls - Maite Mateus and Maria Mendiola. They met during one of the popular TV shows broadcast on Spanish television.

    Group "Baccarat"

Initially, the project was called “Venus”; the performers adhered to the popular Spanish folk movement of those years - “flamenco”. The group's performances were mainly held in various nightclubs, which were very popular among foreign tourists.

This was until February 1977, when one of the representatives of the RCA record company, who accidentally saw their performance, suggested that the charming girls organize a new project. Within a week, the group led by Maite and Maria, having changed their name and repertoire, began to confidently gain the popularity of music listeners. The style of the songs was changed from “flamenco” to “disco” and already in the spring of the same year, the first single “Baccarat” burst to the top of the world charts.

This musical masterpiece sold more than 16 million copies, which allowed the group to appear in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling musical group of 1977. Beautiful and melodic rhythms, decorated with feminine notes of the voices of Maite and Maria, drove their fans around the world crazy. The girls appeared on the screen in contrasting dresses - white and black, like the Moon and the Sun. This image was easy to remember and created a special, unique ambiance.

However, by 1980, the once strong relationship between the performers had deteriorated. It was all due to Maria’s capricious and slightly unbalanced character. The fact is that the main parts were performed by Maite, and Maria only sang along with her. On this basis, a scandal arose that negatively affected the success of the new album “Baccarat”. After this incident, Maria Mendiola left the group, announcing the start of a solo career.
