The emergency number 911 did not become common practice for most Americans until the late 1980s. Today in the United States, 200 million calls are received annually by operators of this service. Residents of 99% of the United States have access to the 911 Service.

THE IDEA of a universal emergency phone number is not new. Such services were created and operated in European countries long before the United States took similar steps. In 1937, the UK became the first country to create and use a universal emergency number. This single 999 telephone system was used by police, firefighters and paramedics. The 999 number was first used in London at 4am by a woman who reported that a criminal had broken into her flat. The robber was arrested a few minutes later.

Other countries have also created similar services. In Belgium the number was 900, in Denmark and Australia - 000, Sweden - 80000, Japan - 119, New Zealand - 111. In 1959, Canada also realized the benefit of one universal number for urgent assistance and began using the British version (999).

In the United States, the idea to create a universal help number appeared in 1957. The National Association of Firefighters has proposed creating and using a single number throughout America. In 1968, the Federal Communications Commission commissioned AT&T to create a universal telephone number that would unite fire, police and medical services and would be available to everyone in the United States. AT&T chose 911 because it was easy to remember and could be dialed fairly quickly. This combination of numbers has never before been used as a dialing code or number for any service. The technological adaptation of the issue also seemed quite simple.

In the United States, there are more than 6 thousand dispatch centers that receive calls to 911. Most of them are equipped with special equipment: when a call comes into the department, the telephone number and address of the caller are immediately displayed on the operator’s display, which makes the deployment of a rescue operation more expeditious. This can be especially important when the caller has a speech impediment or is simply unable to speak. For the police, firefighters and ambulance to arrive, all you have to do is dial the number and place the handset next to the device.

When a call arrives at the dispatch center, it is answered within a few seconds by an operator calling his personal number. Callers are advised to remember this number in case the operator's service causes any problems or dissatisfaction and it will be necessary to verify his identity later. The operator begins to ask a variety of questions, the answers to which help him classify the call depending on the circumstances of the incident. This classification is implemented into a special computer system that identifies the nearest police car that can immediately go to the scene of the incident. In addition, fire and medical services are also sent to the scene.

Each call is also coded according to its level of urgency. In the first place in terms of urgency is the assistance requested by a police officer on duty. This is followed by: information about the crime being committed and serious health problems. Reports of acts of vandalism and mistreatment of animals are in last place in terms of the urgency of the call.

911 Service operators undergo special training. Dispatch services are equipped with special equipment for the deaf and mute. Moreover, the departments have special language lines that allow translation from more than 60 languages. Many states and counties require injured or ill police officers who are temporarily unable to perform their essential duties to serve as 911 operators. This strategy helps save time and money and provide quality service.

Cell phones are also connected to the 911 system. About 65% of users are equipped with a system in which, even if the cell phone drops for some reason, the telephone company provider can help 911 employees locate the nearest tower containing the cell antenna that transmitted the call. In 2005, in the United States it will be possible to determine the location of a person calling on a cell phone with an accuracy of 50-100 meters. 911 Services also distributes brochures and conducts seminars that explain the critical steps in calling 911 to the public. One of the most important requests to the population is that callers do not exaggerate or embellish the facts - many Americans do just that, believing that in this case help will arrive faster. False calls to 911 are punishable very harshly. If a person dialed this number without any special need or just wanted to make fun, then he faces a large fine and even imprisonment.

Most people dial 911 only once or twice in their lives. Knowing how to make this call can help the operator get the help you need quickly. You may be scared, but following these rules will make the calling process easier for you and the operator, according to WikiHow.

Steps

1. Don't panic. Obviously, if you call 911, you have an emergency. The level of adrenaline in your blood is very high. This can affect your speech - you may start speaking too fast, too slow, or even stutter. Stay away from the epicenter of the disaster unless there are injured people there.

2. Find your phone. It is better to call a landline except in case of fire or robbery. This will allow you to determine your location. If you have a fire, don't stay in the building - you need to get out as quickly as possible.

3. Call 911. Pick up the phone and dial 911. You should know that communication with the operator is not always established instantly. Don't hang up if they don't answer you right away.

4. Don't panic. This is easier said than done. But panic won't help. Try to plan what you will say to the dispatcher (see point below). Remember: Panic is your enemy in this race against time.

5. Know what you will be asked.

You should have answers to the following questions:

Where did the emergency occur? It doesn't always happen where you're calling from. You must understand where you are. Try to pay attention to road signs, signboards and intersections if you are on the road.

The essence of the emergency: Do you need help from law enforcement, doctors and/or firefighters? In some areas, the dispatcher or computer will ask you to press certain numbers to help them know who to connect you with.

Brief but detailed description: What happened? What do you know about the incident? What's most important? Typically, it is important to state why you need help (for example, a gunshot wound) and then the reasons for it (for example, a school shooting).

Your phone number. The dispatcher will need instructions on how to reach you, so he or she may call you repeatedly. You must know your phone number.

Location. Provide the dispatcher with your name and address.

6. Listen to the dispatcher. Follow the instructions given to you. The faster you complete them, the greater the chance of survival for everyone involved in this emergency. Even if it is not fatal (eg broken bones), it is very important. Trust the dispatcher unquestioningly. And remember that as long as he or she continues to ask questions and tell you what to do, help is on the way.

7. Don't hang up until you are told to. Anything can happen, and emergency services need to know what the situation is. If a house is on fire, for example, the dispatcher must find out whether there are people in the building and where the emergency exits are.

Common 911 questions

What do, If need to call V 911, But I Not Can speak?
Call and you will be connected to a dispatcher and he or she will attempt to locate you and send someone to check on your condition.

Can I find out the consequences of a car accident for which I called 911?
The best way to do this is to call your local police department later using their phone number.

What situations does the ambulance respond to for children and adolescents?
For children aged 3 to 10 years: suffocation, burns, allergic reaction and seizures. For children from 10 to 16 years old: allergic reactions and attacks.

What should I do if I'm scared to call 911?
If you're really in trouble, you need help. That's what 911 is for.

If, for example, an elderly person dials 911 multiple times (3 or more) because he or she has fallen and cannot get up, will there be consequences?
No, if this person indicates his address and condition, the emergency service will understand the situation, as well as the fears and worries of the elderly person.

What if a person does not speak or uses a special device to communicate?
By law, 911 dispatchers are trained to use TTY and other means of communication, and public emergency communications centers must be equipped with TTYs.

What should I do with a person having a heart attack?
According to the rules, you must dial 911, report that you think the person is having a heart attack, and follow the operator's instructions. He or she will help you cope with situations before the ambulance arrives and instruct you in performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (artificial respiration) if you say you know how to do it. If there is a defibrillator nearby, let the operator know - he or she can give instructions on how to use it. Please note: if possible, it is better to have one person conduct the conversation on the phone while the other performs CPR.

What should I do if I dialed 911 by accident?
Tell the operator that there is no emergency and that you dialed the number by accident. In most cases, especially if you called from a mobile phone, this will all end. If you're dialing from a landline (where your location is automatically detected), some services may ask an officer to check the address to make sure there's no problem.

Can I call from a mobile phone?
Yes. Many mobile phones have a built-in GPS that can help the police find you and help you.

How will 911 know where I am if I don't really know where I am?
If you clearly describe your location, they will know it. If your phone has a GPS locator, the dispatcher can track where you are.

What should I do if I am alone with a person who is sick or injured?
In most cases, the dispatcher will be able to help you over the phone, and emergency vehicles will quickly arrive when called.

How to determine based on the situation whether you need to call 911?
If the situation can wait, then do not call 911, but use the non-emergency number. If the situation persists, dial 911 immediately.

The most important thing is to know where exactly the emergency occurred. Without this information, the dispatcher will not be able to dispatch rescuers. Most mobile phones have built-in GPS, which can be used to determine your location and inform the dispatcher about it.

The 911 number is designed for emergencies that definitely pose a threat (both actual and potential) to life, health or property. Dial 911 only when your situation requires immediate intervention by the police, ambulance or firefighters. Some areas have an alternative number, often 311, that can be used to report critical situations that do not require immediate emergency response but still require immediate public safety attention. Check with your local telephone directory company or municipal authority to find out if there is such a number in your area and, if so, what it is. For example, a house fire, a person having a heart attack, or a robbery are situations to call 911. A water pipe break, a telephone or power line failure, and the famous “cat stuck in a tree” are not situations to call 911 unless they are more urgent (for example, a family member is at home on life support when there is a power failure; or your home is flooded from a broken water main).

Teach your kids how to call 911. Practice with a fake phone and make sure they understand that dialing 911 is only for an emergency!

If you witness an incident that requires an immediate emergency call, call 911. Don't expect someone else to do it—if everyone thinks that way, most incidents will go unanswered. Give the dispatcher as many details as possible about the incident, but don't put yourself at risk by trying to get closer and learn more.

If you are in a large school or company building, you may need to dial another digit (for example, 9+911) to dial 911. In some of them, the telephone network will allow you to dial the emergency number 911 even without connecting to an outside line.

Respect 911, but don't be afraid of it. You will interact with a live person trained to help people in emergency situations.

Be mentally prepared to follow instructions. Most 911 centers will be able to tell you what to do to keep the patient and you safe (for example, how to perform CPR or the Heimlich maneuver). If you physically cannot or are afraid to do what you are told, try to find someone who can do it.

If the incident happens at night at a specific address (for example, at your home), make sure that the address sign is clearly visible so that the ambulance or rescuers can easily find you.

Dial 911 yourself. Do not call a friend or someone else to call emergency services for you. Your area's emergency line will connect you to local emergency services, plus it can track your number so help can be dispatched as quickly as possible. If someone else calls instead of you, it will take longer.

Some 911 centers use an automated dispatch program that requires the dispatcher to quickly read a series of questions to the caller. Using the responses received, the dispatcher will understand who to transfer your call to. It is important to answer all questions and provide as much requested information as possible, even if it may not seem important to you. If you have additional information that the dispatcher did not ask for, do not be afraid to provide it when the opportunity arises. Try not to interrupt the dispatcher when he/she is asking questions.

Most 911 centers automatically transfer calls to the nearest center if the system is overloaded and they can't take your call. As a rule, this is a center in a neighboring district. When you tell us how to get to you, try to take this point into account - the person receiving the call may not be very familiar with your area.

If for any reason you cannot speak, knock on the phone or dial 5 twice - the operator will understand that you are connected.

Contact your local police department and see if they have a text messaging option if you are hearing impaired and unable to talk on the phone.

Before dialing 911, move out of the emergency area.

Provide as much information as possible and speak as clearly as possible.

Warnings

If you are being held hostage by an armed person, it is not safe to dial 911. Another option is to dial 911 and keep the phone turned on near you. The operator cannot hang up if he hears something happening. Most likely, help has already been sent to you, since the hostage situation is difficult to ignore (for example, because you cannot enter the building or area).

Do not practice calling 911 using a real 911 number. An emergency call can only be made in real emergency situations.

In some states, being rude to a 911 dispatcher is punishable by jail time. It is clear that in a stressful situation, not the best human sides take over, but try not to direct the flow of negative emotions towards the people who are trained to help you.

False calls to 911 are a crime in every state. They also distract control room personnel from answering actual calls that require immediate attention.

Don't use deactivated cell phones to practice calling 911 with your children. These calls will most likely be connected.

Do not expect that the 911 center will automatically determine your location - not all have the technical capabilities for this. It is important that you know where exactly the incident is taking place.

Model more than half a century ago it managed to establish itself as one of the best sports coupes in the world. Over time, the title of “best” was supplemented by the understanding that this model has become a full-fledged legend. Of course, this was not a simple coincidence. Everything was meticulously calculated. Everything except one. The name had to be chosen from the options that were at hand. The model should have been called a little differently.

A recent addition to the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart, Germany is a beautifully restored Porsche 901. Wait! Which 901? It's a typo? Actually, no, and in the official video, Porsche explains where the small number of 911s with the model name “901” came from.

This nuance is explained quite simply. Just like today, cars in the early 1960s used three-character names for their models. For example, 203 and 403 models were popular at that time. The French automaker, of course, patented a trademark for car names with three digits, with a zero in the middle. Porsche apparently didn't know this, and managed to build 82 models under the name "901" before Peugeot laid claim to the Germans, forcing the latter to change the nickname for their steed. According to the video, Porsche could not refuse Peugeot after the latter sent them a “friendly, expressive letter.” It was decided to change the name of the model.

But which one? The company decided not to bother with such trifles. The solution turned out to be simple, inexpensive and elegant. Since the package of digital designations was stamped in sufficient quantity, from the three digits 9,0,1, the zero was removed, and the place of the zero in “901” was replaced by a unit. This is how we got the familiar name: “911”.

An unexpected expensive find. The recently restored 901, which was displayed with great honor at the Porsche Museum, was found in an abandoned barn in Germany. This 901 model turned out to be the 57th car of the new version of the sports coupe.

In 2014, a film crew discovered a car in a terrible condition in a barn and filmed a story about it. Porsche later acquired the barely alive car and began work on restoring the rare car. This time history was restored! The restored model will be part of a special exhibition "911 (901 No. 57) - The Rise of a Legend", April 8, 2018.

Among the few 901s, the rarest is considered to be the one whose prototype Porsche commissioned Karmann to build.

The Sotheby's auction house put this unique car up for auction in February 2017. It was sold for €649,600, which was significantly lower than the company's estimated value of at least €850,000.
