    The attractiveness of this niche for entrepreneurs is due to its affordability: the production of food for cats and dogs does not require the development of complex technologies and the construction of huge factories. To start a business, it is enough to purchase a small line of five or six machines that allows you to produce several hundred kilograms of product per hour: if you ensure high quality feed and take care of sales, you can guarantee yourself a net profit of half a million rubles a month.

    Business features

    The domestic segment of the animal feed market is developing rapidly. Just ten years ago, Russian store shelves were filled with products from foreign giants. However, today, many entrepreneurs, finding out, positively perceive the idea of creating small enterprises for the production of feed mixtures.

    The most popular business in this area is the production of food for dogs and cats: mixtures for birds, fish and rodents lag significantly behind them in terms of sales, occupying a modest 15–20% of the market. These products owe their popularity to numerous advantages:

    • No need to waste time preparing food;
    • Feed stocks can be stored for a long time;
    • The finished product contains all the substances necessary for the animal;
    • There are special foods for old, spayed or sick cats and dogs.

    Sales statistics show that the level of demand remains practically unchanged throughout the year. Thus, after the enterprise reaches the planned production volume, the businessman can count on a constant income.

    Types of animal feed

    As a business, the production of dog food requires positioning: in order to understand which target audience a product is intended for, it is necessary to assign it to one of the existing price categories.

    Distinguish feed class:

    • Economy (30% of sales). Consists of cereals, meat and bone meal, beef fat, dyes and flavorings. It is absorbed by the animal's body by about 25-30%. Retail price - from 70 rubles / kg;
    • Standard (40% of sales). Contains up to 30% meat waste and protein hydrolysis products. The rest of the ingredients are corn, rice, barley, vitamin supplements. The food is absorbed by the body by 35–40%. Retail price - from 110 rubles / kg;
    • Premium (25% of sales). The raw materials for such feed are cereal and vegetable mixtures, meat by-products, vitamins and minerals. The digestibility level reaches 50-60%. Retail price - from 200 rubles / kg;
    • Super premium (5% of sales). Consists of meat waste, beef blood and liver, freeze-dried meat and dried vegetables with added vitamin complexes. It is absorbed by the animal's body by 80%. Retail price - from 400 rubles / kg.

    Obviously, a novice entrepreneur should try his hand at the "Standard" segment: if the project is successful, you can try to release products that are more expensive or cheaper.

    Within each price category they produce:

    • Dry food (moisture less than 12%). The production of dry food for dogs and cats does not require sophisticated equipment, and storage requires strict adherence to microclimatic conditions and sealed packaging;
    • Wet food (moisture - more than 12%). Easier to be absorbed by the animal's body and looks like natural food. However, in the manufacture of wet food, it is necessary to maintain the temperature regime and ensure sterility.

    According to the method for the production of food for dogs and cats, which ensures its safety for a long time, there are:

    • Canned wet food in sterile packaging;
    • Frozen food to be kept in the refrigerator.

    Finally, feeds are classified according to their nutrient content:

    • Complete feed that fully satisfies the animal's nutritional needs. May be the only food in the diet of a cat or dog;
    • Incomplete feed. Does not contain a complete set of nutrients, and therefore requires the addition of an animal and other types of food to the diet;
    • Food for special purposes, causing a certain physiological effect (cleansing the stomach, treating the kidneys, improving the coat).

    Requirements for animal feed

    The production process for animal feed in Russia is regulated by the GOST R 55453-2013 standard. Foods that do not meet the nutrient standards are considered incomplete. This fact must be reflected on the packaging:

    Index For kittens For cats For puppies For dogs
    Protein,% 30,0 26,0 22,0 18,0

    Raw materials for feed production

    Dry feeds dominate the market, accounting for 80% of sales. The main ingredients in their composition are waste from the meat industry. Depending on the size of the business, the production of feed can involve both the independent preparation of raw offal and the purchase of already processed semi-finished products, which include:
    • Soy, wheat or corn flour;
    • Meat and bone, bone, feather, fish meal;
    • Animal fats;
    • Vitamin and mineral complexes;
    • Aromatic compositions.

    For the production of canned and frozen feed, they mainly use natural raw materials with a shallower depth of preliminary processing:

    • Lips, abomasum, scar, intestines, udder;
    • Head trimmings;
    • Lungs, trachea;
    • Tails, legs, ears;
    • Animal fats;
    • Cereal and vegetable mixes;
    • Vitamin and mineral complexes.

    To ensure the required quality of the finished product, special attention should be paid to the procurement, transportation and storage of raw materials. So:

    • The raw materials must be fresh. The supplier confirms its origin and safety with certificates and veterinary accompanying documents;
    • At the enterprise, it is necessary to ensure the storage conditions of raw materials specified by the manufacturer. For some products, a refrigerator will be required;
    • All perishable foodstuffs are stored with the addition of fungi and mold inhibitors in sealed packaging.

    Feed production technology

    The technological process for the production of dry dog food can be based on one of three existing methods - baking, granulating or extruding. All of these methods use the same preparatory operations: the difference lies in the method of obtaining solid granules. For novice entrepreneurs, the extrusion technology is optimal, which includes the following steps:

    1. Preparation of raw materials. Meat waste, grain mixtures, meat and bone meal, vitamin supplements and other feed components in the required proportions are added to the receiving hopper of the processing line;
    2. Shredding. On crushers and mills, the mixture is ground to the consistency of semolina or coarse flour, and then sieved to remove large particles;
    3. Mixing. Industrial blenders, containing up to a ton of raw materials, thoroughly mix the raw materials for uniform distribution of all components by volume;
    4. Extruding. The dough mass is evaporated for a minute and then fed into the extruder. Here the mixture is pressed through the shaped holes with screws and at the outlet is cut with a rotating knife to granules of the required size;
    5. Drying. At this stage in the production of dry food, excess moisture is removed from the pellets for 15 minutes. If the process is carried out faster, they will become brittle and begin to crumble during further processing;
    6. Cooling. The granules hot after drying are cooled to room temperature within 7-10 minutes. This operation is necessary to prevent condensation on their surface during packaging;
    7. Frosting. In the pelletizer, the granules are processed through nozzles with animal fats and aromatic compositions that improve the taste and attractiveness of animal feed;
    8. Packing and packaging. The machine packs the product into branded bags and seals them. Food for dogs is poured into packages of 1 kg, 5 kg and 10 kg, for cats - 0.5 kg, 1 kg and 5 kg. The finished product is transported to the warehouse.

    The wet food production process consists of similar steps, but extrusion takes place at lower temperatures and pressures. The soft granules are then not dried, but treated with water. Then the semi-finished product is passed through a refrigerator to achieve the required moisture content and obtain a porous structure. Finally, to prevent the appearance of mold, inhibitors are added to the product, and at the last stage, they are packed in sealed bags.

    The technology for the production of canned feed is based on the use of raw by-products, which are mixed with vitamin and mineral supplements and grain fillers.

    The production process includes:

    • Preparation of raw materials. Meat and offal are removed from the refrigerator and brought to room temperature. Raw materials are crushed with the addition of vitamin complexes, minerals and grain fillers;
    • Mixing. All components are thoroughly mixed in an industrial mixer. During processing, the temperature of the mixture is increased to stimulate the processes of gelatinization of starches and denaturation of proteins;
    • Package. The hot mixture at high temperature is placed in jars, which are then sealed with an airtight lid. Heating prevents harmful microorganisms from entering the finished product;
    • Sterilization. The sealed cans are heated to a temperature of 120 ° C and kept hot for about three minutes. During this time, the pathogens remaining inside are completely neutralized;
    • Packing. After cooling to room temperature, food cans are labeled, packaged in boxes and taken to a warehouse.

    Each manufacturer creates its own recipes and technologies for the production of animal feed. These practices are valuable intellectual property of the company and are therefore strictly protected. Outsiders cannot get access to information, as a result of which start-up entrepreneurs have to pay huge sums of money to specialists who know how to create new recipes.

    Documenting

    Like any other, production and sale of goods, the organization of the production of food for cats and dogs requires state registration. An individual entrepreneur is suitable for small businesses. However, if an entrepreneur is going to work at the federal level or expects to attract investors, it is better to register an LLC right away. In both cases, the OKVED code 10.92 “Production of ready-made pet food” is selected.

    In addition, when using his own recipes, a businessman must develop and register with the Committee for Standardization a normative and technical document regulating the requirements for raw materials and describing all stages of the production of food for cats and dogs. The basis for such TU is the same GOST R 55453-2013.

    Finally, to confirm the compliance of the finished product with quality and safety standards, the manufacturer will have to obtain an official certificate - a certificate or declaration. These documents are equally valid, and therefore the entrepreneur has the right to choose any of them.

    Workshop for the production of feed

    When drawing up a technical project for the production of dry food for dogs and cats, you must adhere to the recommendations regarding the composition and functional purpose of the workshop premises.

    The enterprise should separately highlight:

    1. Raw materials warehouse;
    2. The basis of a workshop with a line for the production of food for dogs, cats;
    3. Finished products warehouse;
    4. Premises for storage and sanitization of equipment and containers;
    5. Bathroom with shower;
    6. A room for changing clothes and resting workers;
    7. Office of the administrative staff.

    If these requirements are met, the total area of the premises can be 300–400 m². In the workshop, ceilings with a height of 4 m or more are needed, since the set of equipment for the production of animal feed includes storage bins.

    The required engineering systems include:

    • Refrigeration equipment for storing perishable raw materials;
    • Fire warning system and fire extinguishing equipment;
    • Autonomous or centralized heating system;
    • Water supply and sewerage;
    • Electric network with a capacity of at least 120–150 kW;
    • Supply and exhaust ventilation with filters to remove contaminants from the air.

    When preparing a room for organizing the production of pelleted feed, it will be necessary to ensure compliance with some sanitary standards:

    • Design technological processes so as to exclude cross or counter movement of raw materials and finished products;
    • Avoid storing detergents and other substances that are not related to the technological process in the production room;
    • Arrange the sewerage system so as to avoid contamination of raw materials and finished products;
    • Protect premises from rodents or insects;
    • To carry out monthly disinfection treatment, deratization and disinsection of industrial premises and equipment for the production of feed.

    The main component required for the implementation of this is a set of units that perform the operations prescribed by the technology. The easiest way is to buy one of the ready-made lines offered in Russia by representatives of Chinese manufacturers. For example, a model of average power with the following parameters will cost 1,950,000 rubles:
    • Line productivity - 500 kg / h;
    • Power consumption - 108 kW;
    • Occupied area - 90 m²;
    • The required staff is 5 people.

    Service staff

    The process of creating a production with a full-fledged technological line differs significantly from an organization: an entrepreneur will need a whole team of specialists to perform basic and auxiliary operations. These include:

    1. Technologist. Must understand the methods of preparation and processing of raw materials, be able to choose the optimal modes of operation of machines and mechanisms;
    2. Operators. The main requirements for employees are responsibility, diligence, experience in servicing equipment for the production of dog food;
    3. Support staff. The enterprise will not be able to function without loaders, auxiliary workers, storekeeper, driver-freight forwarder;
    4. Sales representatives. They negotiate with wholesale buyers, conclude cooperation agreements, collect applications. Work experience - at least two years;
    5. Operator for receiving applications. Accepts orders from sales representatives, generates invoices and transfers them to the warehouse for assembly;
    6. Purchasing Manager. Looks for suppliers with the best conditions, ensures an uninterrupted supply of raw materials to production.

    At the initial stage, the workshop will operate on a five-day schedule in one shift. As the volume of sales grows, you can think about hiring additional employees and switching to a two-shift mode.

    Marketing methods for feed

    A business such as the production of animal feed is in difficult conditions at the start: in the struggle for consumers, you have to compete with the world's largest brands. It is obvious that a novice entrepreneur will not be able to pay for advertising on central TV channels or in popular glossy magazines. Therefore, it is wiser to focus on budget promotion methods:

    • Post brochures and posters in pet shops and veterinary clinics;
    • Arrange presentations and sponsor cat and dog shows;
    • Publish advertisements in specialized publications;
    • Place posters on billboards;
    • Place banners on specialized sites and posts on dog breeders' forums;
    • Order promotional articles to authors of well-known blogs.

    Of course, an entrepreneur should strive to place his goods on the shelves of retail chains on a national scale. However, for a beginner, the cost of entering this market may be too high. Therefore, a business plan for the production of animal feed should provide for the possibility of marketing:

    • Through your own website or other online stores;
    • Pet shops and kiosks of other entrepreneurs;
    • In specialized pavilions in the markets;
    • Small retail stores with similar products;
    • Directly to breeders and nurseries.

    Investment in production

    The cost of equipping the workshop allows you to imagine the approximate amount of investment in the production of dry feed. To raise the necessary funds, you can apply for a loan or try to get it: in any case, investors will want to find out the payback period of the investment. To do this, you need to create an economic model of the enterprise:

    Investments in feed production

    Article Amount, rub.
    Company registration 800
    Opening a bank account 3000
    Formulation development 200000
    Obtaining a certificate 17000

    Rent during equipment installation 140000
    Workshop equipment 3131500
    Commissioning works 100000
    Connection to utility networks 30000
    Connection of communication lines 3000

    Promotional Products 60000
    Administrative expenses 12000
    Raw materials for a month 3141600
    Packaging for a month 107800
    Overalls 10000
    Total: 7086700

    To open a workshop with a capacity of 88 tons of dry feed per month, it will take about seven million rubles. An entrepreneur who does not have the opportunity to find such capital should think about with a minimum investment.

    Also, a fairly impressive amount will have to be allocated monthly to cover all production and non-production costs of the enterprise:

    Running costs

    Article Amount, rub.
    Rent 70000
    Phot 456300
    Individual entrepreneur insurance premiums 2700
    Bank account maintenance 2200

    Utilities 5000
    Administrative expenses 12000
    Internet and communication 5000
    Advertising costs 25000

    Disposal of lamps 200
    Alarm systems maintenance 800

    Fuels and lubricants 15000
    Package 107800
    Raw materials 3141600
    Total: 3939600

    Income and profitability

    It is impossible to calculate the profitability of an enterprise without knowing the main indicator - the material cost of the product. Manufacturers keep the proprietary composition of dry food secret, so for calculations you will have to use a standard recipe:

    Related Videos Related Videos

    Feed cost

    Component Content, % Price, rub / kg For 1 kg of feed, rub.
    Grain mix 29,0–35,0 8 2,5

    Dry vegetables 2,5–3,0 80 2,0
    Total: 100 51,00

    And dry mixes for animals takes a certain amount of time to form a customer base. Therefore, in the first year, the shop is unlikely to reach its maximum performance. With 70% loading, the production volume will be 61.6 tons per month, which will require the purchase of raw materials in the amount of 3,141,600 rubles.

    Monthly feed production plan

    The development of a business plan for the production of feed is completed by the calculation of the main indicators of the economic efficiency of the enterprise:

    Calculation of return on feed production

    If an entrepreneur does not have to share income with investors or pay off, then investments in the production of dry feed will fully pay off in less than a year and a half.

    Conclusion

    A decent income, an opportunity to take your place in an emerging market and a huge audience of buyers - this is the short answer for the production of food for cats and dogs. However, the entrepreneur must remember that animals are completely impartial consumers. If you save on ingredients or be irresponsible in adhering to the technology, then the pets will simply refuse the product, and the owners will immediately stop buying it. Therefore, only constant quality control at every stage of production will allow a beginner not only to survive, but also to achieve success in this area.

    The appearance of a puppy in the house is not only joy and tenderness, but also a great responsibility. The baby must be brought up, vaccinated in a timely manner, and, of course, properly fed.

    Nowadays, industrial food for animals is gaining more and more popularity. Canned food and granules are easy to use and have a well-balanced composition for the full life of pets.

    Russian or foreign?

    Today, the market for pet products is constantly growing. Not only import companies offer their products, but also domestic manufacturers. In Russia, this direction was formed about 25 years ago and continues to develop successfully. Brands are active in reaching a large number of consumers and present canned food and granules from economy to super premium class to the attention of buyers. In the lines of Russian brands, it is no longer difficult to find a suitable product for both healthy animals and those with diseases.

    Interest in domestic brands

    Recently, many foreign brands have been transferring the manufacture of goods to Russia. And dog and cat food manufacturers are no exception.

    Such popular brands as Royal Canin and Pro plan have been making their products in our territory for a long time, rather than bringing them from abroad. In this regard, some owners complain about the deterioration in the quality of feed and begin to look for domestic analogues of industrial food. Attention to Russian goods is also dictated by a sharp jump in prices for foreign dry food and canned food. Therefore, the owners are trying to pick up domestic dog food that is not inferior in quality, but is cheaper than the usual imported food. Manufacturers in Russia are trying to keep the bar and not lose in this matter to their Western competitors.

    Gatchina feed mill

    The enterprise occupies a leading position among the companies that produce industrial food for our smaller brothers. The plant presents a wide range of products, including more than 1200 types of canned food and dry dog food. In Russia, manufacturers keep up with the times and offer customers products of different classes and price ranges. And the Gatchina plant is no exception. Both economy class and super premium food are presented here. The latter includes the rather well-known "Stout" among the owners.

    The line has several types of ready-to-eat foods, designed to meet the different needs of dogs. For adult dogs, 7 types of food are produced with different tastes:

    1. Depending on the size of the pet, there are pellets for small, medium, large and giant breeds.
    2. Hypoallergenic food is suitable for pets who have a tendency to such reactions.
    3. For pets with a problem stomach, food for dogs with sensitive digestion is suitable.
    4. For dogs prone to gaining excess weight, the manufacturer offers food with an optimal level of energy value, which also contributes to the prevention of obesity.

    Although the manufacturer classifies "Stout" as a "super-premium" line, veterinarians still classify it as "premium", since the composition cannot boast of the proper amount of meat.

    Another equally popular product of the Gatchina plant is “Our Mark”. The line is constantly growing and replenished with goods designed for different needs of animals. In addition to standard pellets with different tastes for dogs with no health problems, puppies and elderly individuals, the manufacturer produces dry food designed for active pets and working dogs.

    "Wedge"

    KlinVet is no less famous among the producers of dog food in Russia. The Willy Tail brand, represented by the company, offers canned food and dry food for four-legged human friends. The line includes several products designed for both puppies and adults of small, medium and large breeds. Despite the fact that the feed is an economical option, it contains no chemical components, GMOs and flavors. However, consumers write in their reviews that canned food and granules are suitable only for healthy animals that are not prone to allergies. In addition to industrial dog food, the manufacturer offers products for other pets.

    "Scythian"

    The Skif company is also included in the list of the best producers of dog food in Russia. A wide selection of premium dry food makes it possible to purchase ready-made food for kitties and adult dogs of various ages, activity and weight:

    1. Puppies of small and large breeds, including universal food for all babies.
    2. For adults, granules are suitable, designed, in addition to animals of different sizes, for allergy sufferers and dogs with a susceptible stomach.
    3. The manufacturer offers lively and measured animals food with a carefully balanced balance of all important substances.

    Granules are made at a modern plant of the international holding Provimi, which allows us to speak about the quality of the product. It contains no soy, preservatives and other chemical elements, which minimizes the likelihood of allergies in pets.

    For ready meals, they use chicken and turkey meat, as well as cereals and vegetables for proper digestion of the pet.

    "RosPes"

    RosPes specializes in treats, accessories and dog food. In the list of Russian manufacturers, this is almost the only company engaged in the development of goods designed only for dogs. The line includes ready-made food for any dog: from puppies to adults, including service dogs. Due to the variety of tastes and directions, you can pick up granules for almost any pet that does not suffer from chronic diseases:

    1. Several flavors are offered to dogs with digestive problems or food intolerances.
    2. Puppies can be pampered with either breed-specific or universal food.
    3. For adult and elderly dogs, the manufacturer has made granules taking into account their needs and age-related problems.

    RosPes is constantly improving its product, trying to meet Western standards and customer expectations.

    Whether to choose domestic goods

    The question of choosing food for a four-legged gourmet is rather complicated. The huge selection of granules and canned food baffles even experienced owners. Experts also have different opinions on pet feeding. Many people still prefer to treat their wards with imported food, believing that it is of better quality. But it is important to understand that most foreign brands have been making their products in Russia for a long time.

    The best manufacturers of dog food, according to veterinarians and breeders, have changed not only their location, but also the composition and formulation of the granules, which could not but affect their quality. This has already been repeatedly noticed by the owners of tetrapods. By purchasing an expensive foreign package, the buyer, in fact, takes the domestic feed, but with a manufacturer's margin. Therefore, more and more often, owners choose Russian-made food for their pets, since its quality has only been growing lately.

    Oh yes Pushkin!

    Pet owners are a solvent audience that does not spare money for their pets, this is what entrepreneur Andrey Pushkin thought, who successfully launched a chain of hotels for cats several years ago. And in 2018, he introduced a new product to the market - Hati raw meat food for cats and dogs, counting on strong demand. But the excitement has not yet been observed, and the entrepreneur has to make a lot of efforts to sell.

    35 years old, entrepreneur from Moscow, founder of a company that produces natural food for animals Hati... He graduated from the Faculty of Economics of Moscow State University, after which he worked as a financial analyst in the holding "Airports of Regions", then - in the state corporation "Rosatom". Opened a hotel for animals in 2014 "Sir Cat" in the center of Moscow, which has grown into a chain of four establishments. The Hati project was launched in 2018.

    From cats to dogs

    In 2014, Andrey Pushkin, who had previously worked as a financial analyst for seven years, launched his first own business project - the Sir Cat hotel for animals. To this he was pushed by the desire for self-realization and love for animals.

    “In the office, I lacked a complex task that I could carry out from and to. There you are a cog in a big car, not an independent unit. In "Sir Cat" it warms my soul that I came up with and made this project with my own hands. Although some said - well, a man quit Rosatom to deal with cats, ”Andrei recalls.

    This business is developing successfully, today "Sir Cat" is a chain of four hotels in Moscow. But in 2018, Andrey wanted to implement some new project from another area. “Since I have been rotating in the animal world all the time, my thoughts involuntarily went in this direction. In pet hotels, I saw that some of the owners brought raw meat as food for their cats. And I thought about creating natural food for animals, ”says Andrey Pushkin.

    Another reason to turn to this niche was the Chihuahua dog, which often visits Andrey. She ate canned food all the time. At some point, the entrepreneur wondered why people consider it normal to feed their animals canned food, while they themselves eat as fresh food as possible. And why, when choosing products for themselves, people look at the expiration date, but do not do so with food for their favorites?

    Andrei thought that the rules of healthy eating that people apply to themselves should also be applied to pets. We need food that will become an alternative to ready-made industrial feed.

    Andrey hoped that food made from natural raw meat would be in demand among Moscow owners of dogs and cats. Therefore, I decided to launch a production of such food - and founded the Hati project.

    Step by step

    When developing his product - sausages in a polyamide casing made of raw meat and offal (there are options with the addition of vegetables and cereals) - Andrey Pushkin relied on the requirements for feed existing in Europe and the USA. Together with Russian veterinarians, the project team worked out the recipe and the ratio of ingredients.

    After that, it was necessary to decide the question of which packaging to produce the feed: to sell raw meat in pieces, in the form of nuggets or sausages. When working out each option, the idea with sausages seemed to be the most optimal.

    “It was important to decide on the form of issue at the investment stage in order to buy the right equipment. If you change your mind later, it will be too late. We had to take responsibility, although we didn’t know if our customers would like the sausage format, ”says Andrey Pushkin.

    The necessary equipment was purchased from Belarus. But the project team had to suffer with it, before it turned out to produce the sausages of the required weight.

    “The equipment arrived, so shiny and beautiful, and at first we looked at it like sheep at a new gate. Didn't know what to do with him. While we were adjusting the equipment and making the first experimental batches, we used about 100 kilograms of raw materials, ”says the entrepreneur.

    All sausages in the first batches were of different weights. And in accordance with GOST for the production of food for pets, the deviation in the mass of each product should be no more than 1%. Here, some sausages weighed 90 grams, the next - 120 grams.

    “I looked at all this, and I felt bad. We did not have time to think about sales yet, but with production we have already stepped on such a rake. Although, according to the passport, the equipment was supposed to give an error within 1%, ”Andrei recalls.

    The situation was corrected after a call to the manufacturer. Its representatives explained that it is necessary to make some changes in the design of the "syringe" that feeds the meat into the package. When this was done, sausages of the desired weight began to be obtained.

    At first, Andrey offered the finished products to be tested for free by his friends and acquaintances who have pets. He asked them to give an honest assessment of the feed. The response was positive, but a number of changes were made thanks to the feedback. We switched from a 7-layer casing to a 2-layer one and reduced the diameter of the sausages from 45 to 32 millimeters. As a result, the product freezes faster in the blast chiller (30 minutes), defrosts faster at the client's home and is easier to remove from the package.

    Supplier search

    For the production, it took about 3 months to look for a suitable room, since there are certain requirements for the meat shops (for example, the presence of flushes in the floor, tiled floors and walls up to two meters, electric power of 50 kW, etc.). Andrey Pushkin looked only at the finished premises, so as not to spend money on repairs at the start. The necessary workshop was found in Korolev near Moscow.

    It took a lot of time to choose suppliers. Private traders offering to buy meat in small quantities were not suitable for the HatiFood project. In this case, one would have to independently organize the slaughter process to obtain a veterinary certificate, or do without it. Therefore, we were looking for only large and reliable suppliers, whose meat is accompanied by the necessary documents. The founder of Hati only selected farms that did not use antibiotics and growth stimulants.

    Although domestic animals, which are predators, have natural defense mechanisms against harmful microorganisms, nevertheless, each batch of products is sent to the laboratory for research - for the presence of pathogenic microorganisms. As a result, in order to find reliable suppliers, it was necessary to change several dozen enterprises. “Those we are working with now were searched for by trial and error,” adds Andrey.

    How and from what food is prepared for four-legged

    The entire carcass of the animal is used to make Hati products. Not cuttings that are no longer suitable for preparing food for people, but all parts of the carcass. The first butcher of the project could not come to terms with this.

    “He was horrified. How is it to use the tenderloin or sirloin for animal feed? For a long time he did not agree with the fact that the meat does not need to be salted and pepper, that it is not necessary to add water to give the mass elasticity. He suggested adding an onion, which dogs cannot eat. In the end, we didn't work out. This man was haunted by the fact that we were feeding the dogs good meat, ”says Andrey Pushkin.

    As a result, another butcher was hired to this place, who at first also asked similar questions, but still managed to overcome his previous professional habits and now clearly follows the cooking recipe.

    Hati sausages are made from chicken, beef, turkey and rabbit. The by-products of the first category are added to the composition, and whole vegetables are added to some varieties. The production does not use dyes, flavors, preservatives, gluten, grains and synthesized additives.

    It takes one working day to produce one batch. First, the butcher removes the meat from the bones. Then the meat and offal are chopped, and then mixed with the rest of the ingredients. After that, the product is syringed (packed) into a casing, clamped with clips and enters the shock freezing chamber. The packaging process for a 200 kg product takes about 3-4 hours.

    Hati food is stored in freezers. To feed the animal, the food must first be defrosted and put in a bowl, free from the packaging.

    Issue price

    Now Hati sausages from chicken cost 49 rubles per 100 grams, from turkey - 59 rubles, from beef - 79 rubles, from rabbit - 99 rubles.

    Some buyers ask again if there is a mistake. “They are surprised that this price is per 100 grams, not per kilogram. But beef of this quality cannot cost 79 rubles per kilogram. Even kits for dogs, which are “non-format” for human consumption, are more expensive, ”Andrey calculates.

    Some buyers compare the cost of Hati's food to the cost of canned meat and commercially produced dry food. They are cheaper than the products manufactured by Andrey Pushkin's enterprise. “But in this feed either there is no meat (meat and bone meal, animal protein hydrolyzate is used), or there is“ dog quality ”meat, that is, sinewy scraps, minced meatballs and everything that cannot be sold unprocessed for human consumption,” he explains.

    After the launch of the project, the site of the project became the main platform for the sale of Hati products. Now, when ordering from 2500 rubles, delivery in Moscow is free. If the order is for a smaller amount, then delivery will cost 189 rubles.

    Over time, social networks began to bring more purchases. The project has pages on almost all social networks, but Instagram turned out to be the most selling one. The founder of Hati suggests this is because the prospect sees actual reviews from other buyers here. This makes it easier for him to decide on the purchase of a new product. In order to increase the number of sales through social networks, it is planned to increase activity in them, primarily on VKontakte.

    The project cooperates with the online store MoscowFresh, which purchases Hati products, and then independently sells them. Now it is planned to master offline sales: an agreement has already been signed with one pet store, negotiations are underway with another.

    “We put our Hati freezers in the store and see how the sales are going. For us, this is a new economy (we need to fight off the cost of a freezer) and a new channel. We do not have such experience yet, ”says Andrey.

    Hati collaborates with breeders - they are the authority on those who buy dogs or cats from them. Therefore, their recommendations on the choice of pet food are listened to. “They are sometimes trusted even more than veterinarians. We can motivate breeders to cooperate with us with a one-time payment for the attracted client or a percentage of sales. Such a sales channel shows itself well, but the problem is that there are only a few breeders who know how to sell, and most importantly, who can do it in social networks, ”sums up Andrey Pushkin.

    Most often, Hati food is bought by owners of small dogs. It is too expensive for their owners to feed large dogs with this kind of food. It is cheaper to cook porridge, to which they add a little meat. Now the buyers of the project are only residents of Moscow and the Moscow region.

    Startup mistakes

    Andrey Pushkin says that his first project - the zoological hotel "Sir Cat" - quickly became popular. And to attract clients, he and the team of this project practically did not have to put in efforts. Andrey expected that this would be the case with Hati as well.

    “We assumed that we would now offer the market a new product - natural food for animals, and they would immediately tear it away from us. It was our mistake, of course, just by turning on the ads, nothing happens. Each buyer must be "accompanied", - says Pushkin.

    “There are two cases when sales happen as if“ without our efforts ”. The animal does not eat its food well, and the owner is forced to constantly change food, and then finally finds us. Or the owner is already feeding his pet natural raw food, and we just make it easier for him and save time, ”Andrey Pushkin shares his observations.

    “We thought we were going to post a nice photo of the meat and everything would fly in terms of sales. We are used to in "Sir Cat" that people correspond in the comments to our posts, and we "sleep". Now in Hati we immediately respond to comments as soon as they appear. It seems obvious that this should be so, but for us it was a revelation, ”explains Pushkin.

    Its founder invested about 8 million rubles in the launch of the Hati project. For a faster payback, he plans to launch new products in the near future - cookies made from natural meat. In terms of their composition, they will be the same as sausages. To produce them, you will need to buy an oven in which they will be baked and dried.

    Another novelty in the assortment is jellied meat for dogs. For its preparation, they will use the bones from which the meat is cut for Hati sausages. Now these bones are thrown away, and in the production of jellied meat they will become an ingredient for it, and not waste.

    “It is too early to talk about the payback period. We are new and only studying the market. To get to zero, we need to grow in terms of sales at least six times. And we will try to reach this figure by the end of the year, ”Andrey Pushkin cites the figures.

    Today, many people have pets for themselves or their children. Of course, by purchasing a pet, a person takes responsibility for its maintenance. And for this it is necessary to correctly. To choose the right food, it is important to know how and with the use of what equipment the production of food for cats and dogs takes place.

    Granulated feed

    In order to make such food, it is necessary to grind hay, straw or any others and then mix them according to the desired recipe with other additives that contain the necessary minerals, trace elements, bone or meat meal, etc. Production of food for cats and dogs - it is a profitable business that allows its owner to receive a stable income all year round, and the owners - to maintain a correct and rich diet for the animal.

    It is worth noting that, without knowing the theory, it will not be possible to make such feed on your own, even with the equipment, but scientists have developed some complex recipes for production. For example, the technology for the production of food for cats and dogs in granules is carried out according to a strict recipe, at the end of which the food is combined into granules. The dimensions of this product can be from a few millimeters to several centimeters. The choice of product sizes depends on what kind of pet lives with a person.

    Release technology

    If we talk about general technology, then the production of food for cats and dogs comes down to the following general points:

    • the process of grinding grain crops;
    • mixing with organic and mineral additives;
    • heat treatment together with the humidification process;
    • granule creation or granulation;
    • drying and cooling of the final product;

    This is a schematic diagram of the production of dry food for cats and dogs. This recipe is a common technology. The difference between all other recipes lies only in the constituent parts of the feed base and its additives.

    Stages of dog food production

    If everything is clear with the general technology for obtaining this product, then the production itself begins.

    • The first step is mixing all the required ingredients.
    • The second step is adding hot water and mixing again.
    • The third stage is the process of processing the feed with pressure and steam, as well as passing the raw material through the die-heads, which are engaged in the formation of granules of the required size.
    • The fourth stage is drying the product.
    • The fifth stage is sprinkling the granules with various fats, as well as flavor enhancers.
    • The sixth and last stage is the packaging of the finished feed into packages.

    This is roughly how the process of producing food for cats and dogs is carried out.

    Composition and demand

    Currently, the facts are that the demand for dog food is about half that for cat food. The main reason for this was that people most often prepare food for these animals at home on their own. Usually, these are cereals, soups, etc. However, this is an unbalanced food, from which dogs very often get sick or they can get hair. The composition of the feed for these pets usually contains the following elements: ground cereal grains, fish and meat additives, soy, milk powder, fat and other elements. This product is balanced and healthy for the animal.

    Dry food equipment

    In order to be engaged in the manufacture of this product, it is necessary to have some apparatus. The list of necessary equipment for the production of dog and cat food includes devices such as:

    • crusher;
    • mixer;
    • dispenser;
    • extruder;
    • feeders;
    • packing unit.

    This kit is suitable for the production of dry food only. Naturally, the amount of product that can be produced, for example, per day of work, will directly depend on the power and performance of the purchased units. If there is a need for the production of a granular product, then you will need a slightly different equipment for the production of food for cats and dogs;

    • grain bin;
    • bunker for additives;
    • mill;
    • mixer, loader;
    • air conditioner (hopper with steamer and unloading auger);
    • granulator;
    • cooler.

    It is also worth noting that these sets are only standard and necessary devices. If a need or desire arises, several auxiliary devices can be added to them. For example, a silage or straw chopper can be purchased, or more dies can be added to be able to produce pellets in a wide variety of sizes.

    Lines

    Lines for the production of food for cats and dogs differ in their technical parameters, as well as in productivity per hour. For example, a line with a capacity of 200 kg / h will allow its owner to produce animal feed that will be extruded, that is, free of harmful microorganisms. The technical parameters of such a line are as follows:

    1. The consumed electricity during the operation of the line is 92 kW.
    2. The area required to accommodate all equipment is 80 sq.m.
    3. The number of people required to service all elements of the line is 5.

    Extruder

    Before starting the extrusion process, the raw material must go through stages such as mixing and conditioning. It should be noted that the conditioning process is one of the most important to be carried out. During this operation, the feed is first moistened, then heated with hot and dry steam under a pressure of 0.2 to 0.5 MPa, as well as a temperature of 110 to 130 degrees Celsius. After this process is completed, the raw material will become more plastic, which will improve the subsequent extrusion process. It is important to note that feed extruders are the latest technology that allows you to make a completely digestible and pure product from feed.

    After the conditioning process has been completed, the raw material goes into the extruder hopper. Then, with the help of the feeder, the product is transferred to the working body. It should be noted that the receiving hopper of this device provides for the possibility of adding various components to the composition of the feed.

    The extrusion process itself, which takes place in this equipment, consists of the following stages: heat treatment, moisture removal, sterilization, texturization, and granulation. Heat treatment in this unit takes place by supplying hot steam for 4-6 seconds, after which the feed is affected by a pressure of 30 atmospheres. The fact that the raw materials are processed in just 6 seconds gives the advantage of complete preservation of the protein, as well as improved availability of lysine from the feed. Feed extruders also add such positive qualities as: improved palatability, improved digestibility. These two advantages allow you to increase the animal's weight while using less feed.

    Line advantages

    The presence of the line gives the following advantages:

    1. Allows you to carry out the process of producing feed from completely natural ingredients.
    2. It guarantees a large surface, as well as an improvement in its porosity, which will allow the animal's gastric juice to better penetrate into the product.
    3. The raw materials obtained from the production with the help of the line have a less coarse structure than after granulation, which avoids injury to the animal's esophagus when eating feed.
    4. The resulting raw material is coarse, which means that it does not form dust that could stick to the digestive or respiratory organs of the pet.
    5. The granules obtained from the line are abrasion resistant.
    6. Stability and stability of the goods during transportation.
    7. The hygiene of the compound feed is higher.
    8. The extrusion process improves feed digestibility by about 30%.

    Wet feed

    The production of wet food for dogs and cats is a three-step process.

    The first stage is the freezing or cooling of by-products that are delivered for processing. During this process, using knives or shredders, they are cut, getting meat pieces that are striking when you open the package.

    The second important element in the production of this type of feed is the binder sauce. The preparation of this viscous liquid takes place according to a special recipe, which provides for the use of different thickeners, gels. They are necessary in order to create the necessary texture and consistency of the dish.

    The last, third stage is sterilization. Since very little preservatives are added to this type of feed, unlike dry feed, this process is very important. After the container with the product has been filled, it is placed in a special heating unit, which brings the temperature to a strictly defined level, thereby sterilizing the food.
