American gangsters of the early 20th century

The indomitable spirit of adventurism, the Prohibition of 1920-1933, the Great Depression of 1929-1933 are the main reasons why America at the beginning of the twentieth century experienced the rise of crime. To the mafia organizations founded at the end of the nineteenth century, countless street gangs, individual men and members of the fair sex - gangster women, were added. who together created one of the most fascinating, exciting, interesting chapters in the history of the United States.

This story continues to this day, as the underground empire of the east and west coasts is still ruled by the Five Families, formed almost a hundred years ago. The police do not sleep, conduct investigations, arrest small fry, sometimes send criminal dons to jail, but instead of those arrested or liquidated, like mushrooms after rain, new criminal authorities grow - the mafia is immortal. And these are its most famous representatives.

Photos of American gangsters of the 20th century

Gavin Veshala, an enthusiastic photographer from Buffalo, decided to revive the odious gangsters with color, because one should know not only the heroes, but also the villains, which the presented characters certainly are. Charles got his nickname "Lucky" (Lucky) when he managed to survive the attack of competitors who kidnapped the gangster, took him to a quiet place and beat him to a pulp. Charlie will not make such mistakes again, he will always hit first, leaving no chance for the enemies to escape. The well-known episode from the picture "The Godfather", when the killers simultaneously eliminate all the enemies of the character Al Pacino, is taken from the biography of this criminal genius, who in the early 1930s rose to the rank of the main boss of the mafia. Even once again imprisoned, Lucky continued to lead the criminal empire and helped the US armed forces to conduct a successful military operation in Sicily in 1943, for which he received an amnesty and was expelled from the country. Settled in Italy, died of natural causes in the winter of 1962, which is an extremely rare occurrence for representatives of the gangster craft.

Among others, a liquidation department was formed - the so-called Murder Corporation, headed by Albert Anastasia, aka Umberto Anastasio, nicknamed the Mad Hatter. The killer committed the first murder back in 1921, for which he received a death sentence. But the high-quality work of the lawyers, together with the failure of all witnesses to appear at the court hearing during the retrial of the case, led to the annulment of the sentence and the release of the gangster to freedom, where the killer was waiting for new crimes and the post of head of the Murder Corporation. Like many other representatives of the American mafia, Albert was born and raised in Italy, from where he sailed to the promised lands. In gratitude for exemplary service in the ranks of the armed forces and participation in World War II, America gave citizenship to the bandit. When Lucky, Doto, other criminal authorities of Italian origin were expelled from the country, Anastasio managed to stay in the States, founded his own family, the new leader of which eventually gave the order to liquidate the founder. Mafiosi was shot dead in a barbershop on October 25, 1957.

Moved to the States as a four-year-old kid, joined a street gang at the age of 13, was already prosecuted at the age of 17. At 24 (1915) he was imprisoned for six months for illegal possession of weapons. Freed, Costello, in his own words, never again took up arms. Acquaintance with the main criminal celebrities opened numerous doors for the future consigliere, provided the necessary opportunities, which Costello took full advantage of. Politicians, judges, police officials were happy to communicate with the mafia consigliere, because Frank dressed, talked, behaved not like a standard thug, but like a skilled negotiator who was interesting to deal with. A talent for diplomacy helped the criminal survive gang wars, get out of problems with the law, successfully retire in the 1950s, retaining gambling income and quietly living out a century in retirement. He died of a heart attack in the winter of 1973.
